Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Gardener to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of plants and borders with experience in both hand and mowing tools. This role involves nurturing and maintaining our heritage gardens, ensuring that plants thrive and outdoor spaces are beautiful for our many visitors to Highclere Castle.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular maintenance of gardens, including planting, pruning, weeding, and mulching.
  • Operate power tools and hand tools safely and effectively for various gardening tasks.
  • Irrigate plants appropriately to promote healthy growth.
  • Working within historic greenhouses used for fruit production as well as potted indoor plants
  • Preparing of seasonal display plants for the state rooms in the Castle.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of new garden layouts.
  • Monitor plant health and identify any issues such as pests or diseases.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organisation of gardening tools and equipment.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure all gardening tasks are completed efficiently including a rota of watering on weekends.

Requirements

  • Proven experience with plants is preferred, but in-house training will be provided in all areas - a love of gardening is essential
  • Familiarity with the use of power tools and hand tools related to gardening tasks.
  • Knowledge of plant care, including growing conditions, watering needs, and pest management.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for horticulture.
  • Good physical fitness to perform manual labour tasks associated with gardening.
  • Excellent communication and / or customer service skills with an enthusiasm to engage with visitors.
  • A full Driving License is preferred, candidates must also have reliable transport to and from the Estate.
