Thorpe Hamlet, United Kingdom Anglian Water Full time £40,000 - £60,000 per year

Geotechnical Engineer

Join the @one Alliance – a collaborative partnership of eight industry-leading companies (Anglian Water, Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska, and SWECO) delivering over half of Anglian Water's capital investment programme. As we prepare for the challenges and opportunities of AMP8, we're looking for talented individuals to help us shape the future of water design and infrastructure.

At Anglian Water, we're Always Exploring – ensuring we remain competitive, attractive, and rewarding for both existing and prospective employees. By Doing The Right Thing, we're committed to recognising and rewarding our people fairly and transparently, while Building Trust through a culture that prioritises health, safety, and wellbeing.

Your Purpose

As a Geotechnical Engineer, you'll be a key member of our geotechnical and geoenvironmental discipline, supporting the Principal Geotechnical Engineer in delivering safe, sustainable, and value-driven ground engineering solutions across our diverse portfolio of water and water recycling projects.

You'll guide early-stage assessments, ground investigation requirements, and interpretation of geotechnical and geoenvironmental information to influence and shape design decisions. You'll champion sustainable ground engineering approaches that reduce carbon, enhance natural capital, and support Anglian Water's long-term environmental commitments.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Consider geotechnical and geoenvironmental constraints at Desk Study stage to inform early design decisions.
  • Support development of Engineering Project Plans, including scope, cost, risk, and resource requirements for ground investigation.
  • Undertake site visits to understand ground conditions, support constructability assessments, and inform design viability.
  • Specify ground investigations, including soil classification, strength testing, in-situ testing, groundwater monitoring, and geoenvironmental sampling.
  • Provide geotechnical input on foundation solutions, earthworks, slope stability, trench stability, ground improvement, and asset protection.
  • Produce interpretive Ground Investigation Reports, including geotechnical parameters and design recommendations.
  • Coordinate geotechnical and geoenvironmental requirements to ensure fully integrated solutions.
  • Review and manage specialist sub-consultants undertaking GI and laboratory testing.
  • Support risk assessments and conceptual ground models, identifying hazards associated with both geotechnical and contaminated land conditions.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including Civil Engineers, Process Engineers, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, and Enabling Managers.
  • Feed into value-engineering discussions to improve affordability and optimise ground solutions.
  • Support sustainable, low-carbon geotechnical design approaches, including material re-use, minimising excavation, and efficient ground improvement methods.
  • Ensure CDM and health & safety considerations are embedded into all geotechnical aspects of design.
  • Assist in driving innovation, digital ground modelling, and modern investigative and analytical approaches.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure clear communication and acceptance of geotechnical design inputs.

About You

You will ideally have:

  • A degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in geotechnical design, ground investigation, and/or construction-phase geotechnical support.
  • Working towards chartership with a relevant institution (ICE, IOM3, or Geological Society).
  • Preferable experience within the water sector or other major infrastructure projects.
  • Ideally, but not essential, experience of Design & Build delivery environments.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex geotechnical information to a range of audiences.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage your workload effectively.
  • A commitment to sustainability, carbon reduction, innovation, and continual professional development.
  • Integrity, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative approach that supports diversity and inclusion.

Depending on your skills, experience, and interests, you could be aligned to one of our four business units:

Water

The Water Business Unit provides strategic design and technical support across the clean water network – from infrastructure planning to treatment resilience – ensuring secure and efficient water supplies for future generations.

Water Infrastructure Portfolio – Supporting potable water pipeline projects, providing ground investigation, trench stability, ground movement, and pipeline bedding recommendations.

National Infrastructure Portfolio – Supporting the protection and diversion of Anglian Water assets impacted by major infrastructure schemes, including assessment of geotechnical constraints and safe temporary works considerations.

Water Non-Infrastructure Portfolio – Providing geotechnical support for treatment works, pumping stations, and groundwater abstraction schemes, including foundation design, earthworks, and ground improvement recommendations.

Water Recycling (East and West)

Our Water Recycling teams deliver wastewater infrastructure and treatment solutions. You will support projects by specifying and interpreting ground investigations, assessing geotechnical risks, and enabling safe, sustainable design and construction for excavation, pipelines, chambers, and treatment assets.

Place Based Thinking

Delivering some of the largest and most complex projects within the @one Alliance, this team focuses on integrated, multi-site solutions that enhance resilience across whole catchments. As a Geotechnical Engineer, you'll provide early-stage ground risk advice, guide ground investigation strategies, and support integrated design solutions.

Why Join Us?

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with one of the UK's most progressive design and delivery alliances. You'll play a key role in shaping ground engineering solutions that underpin the next generation of water and water recycling assets, helping us respond to the region's most significant environmental challenges.

We offer a culture that values creativity, technical excellence, and professional growth, with continuous learning and opportunities to influence how we design and deliver sustainable infrastructure.

We reward our people fairly and transparently, with a strong emphasis on inclusion, wellbeing, and long-term career development.
