Our opportunity
We are looking for an Engagement Coordinator (Youth & Community) to join our community development team in the North West.  The Engagement Coordinator will work to deliver high-quality engagement and participation activities that support the Trust's regional and national priorities and meet the needs of the diverse communities alongside our waterways.

This is an exciting and varied role, that will suit a motivated and hardworking individual who values collaboration, and is able to use their initiative to deliver work to a very high standard. You will be a team player who can build relationships with colleagues and external partners at all levels. This role includes leading elements of our externally funded community engagement programmes.

The engagement coordinator will coordinate youth engagement activities in the region, with a focus on inclusion and diversity to create engaging and meaningful opportunities for young people to enjoy our canals and rivers, improve their health & wellbeing, volunteer and develop skills. You will take the lead on developing and delivering our regional events programme, working to ensure our offer raises the profile of the Trust. Including activities and events that will generate income for our charity.

Ideally you will have experience working with communities in the region and demonstrate enthusiasm for overcoming barriers and challenges that some of our communities face when accessing our waterways.  We are looking for a candidate who can communicate clearly with a range of audiences, problem solve and take responsibility for managing their own workload.

This role will deliver a range of activities that: 

  • To engage with communities and priority audiences including children and young people year olds) and underrepresented groups.
  • To lead engagement activities including events, volunteering, training and health & wellbeing activities.
  • To improve people's awareness, usage, access and enjoyment of Trust managed inland waterways and land.
  • To deliver the agreed outcomes of externally funded programmes.

As this role is on the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 Exception Order applicants must state the details of any cautions or convictions whether spent or unspent on the self-disclosure section of the application form.

This job involves regulated activity with children and adults at risk as defined by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. Therefore, an Enhanced Criminal Record check will be undertaken by the successful candidate prior to employment. A criminal record is not necessarily a bar to employment with us. HR will advise and decisions made on a case by case basis. 

About the role
 

Delivery:

  • Deliver a program of community activities, volunteering, and local engagement events
  • Engage children, young people, and underrepresented groups, particularly those living within 1km of the canal to increase local engagement and embed the canal network into local communities

  • Implement Trust initiatives such as the Let's activity programme

  • Recruit, train, and manage a team of volunteers, including young people,
  • Manage resources and equipment (including our regional events trailer) to support our regional programme.
  • Promote the Trust work as a charity within engagement, directing fundraising opportunities where possible to line managers.
  • Deliver public facing events for the Trust and support other stakeholders in organising events on the Trust's network via the third party events process

Partnerships & networks:

  • Collaborate with external partners and internal colleagues to develop and execute the regional community engagement strategy.
  • Build robust local networks with a diverse range of community organizations to enhance the quality, quantity, and sustainability of community-led engagement activities on and around water.

Comms & marketing:

  • Promote the Trust's engagement projects and recognise community contributions through press, media, and appropriate communication channels.

Project management – Financial, research etc:

  • Establish and implement a regional delivery plan to ensure the successful delivery of required outputs meeting internal and external evaluation and reporting requirements.
  • With support from internal colleagues, investigate additional funding opportunities to grow our regional programme.

About you
Work experience:

  • Proven ability to build strong relationships and collaborate with partner organisations, communities and key stakeholders to deliver mutual benefits and co-designed projects and programmes
  • Experience of developing and coordinating social action/volunteer projects
  • Experience of project management, delivery, reporting and evaluation
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of issues relating to working with young people or vulnerable people including safeguarding
  • Experience of working within the Third Sector/Voluntary organisations is desirable.

Skills: 

  • Ability to work or experience of working effectively with a diverse group of people, including minority or marginalised or underrepresented communities.
  • Excellent project management skills including budget management and control.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High levels of energy and commitment.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings / weekends as required.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, be motivated and self-managed.
