Key Responsibilities & Technical Requirements

Technical Competence

  • Read and interpret technical drawings, levels, and specifications accurately.
  • Set up and safely use trench boxes, drag boxes, and manhole boxes.
  • Operate pipe lasers with precision to ensure correct line and level.
  • Lay concrete, clay, and plastic drainage pipes of varying sizes, ensuring correct bedding, surround, and testing procedures.
  • Construct, bench, and finish manholes in accordance with design requirements.

Drainage & Groundwater Management

  • Effectively manage groundwater, including setting up and operating suitable pumps.
  • Follow correct trench preparation and backfilling procedures to maintain stability and safety.
  • Ensure all drainage installations meet quality and compliance standards.

Pad Foundations

  • Excavate, prepare, and construct pad foundations to precise tolerances.
  • Place and level blinding, reinforcement, and concrete as required.
  • Work closely with engineers and site management to achieve programme targets and quality expectations.

Site Safety & Coordination

  • Work safely around live services, applying service avoidance techniques at all times.
  • Carry out daily pre-start checks and basic maintenance on tools, plant, and equipment.
  • Report defects, maintenance needs, or safety concerns promptly to the site management team.

External Works Experience (Desirable)

  • Kerbing, edging, slab laying, and block paving.
  • Knowledge of materials and construction methods for underground drainage, road formation, and hard/soft landscaping.

Skills & Experience

  • 5–10+ years' experience in skilled groundworks, with a strong emphasis on deep drainage and pad foundations.
  • Additional CPCS/NPORS* tickets (Telehandler, Dumper, Roller) are advantageous.
  • Experienced working gangs or established teams are highly sought after.
