The Finance Department provides financial reporting for the firm, including the preparation of partnership and statutory accounts, along with regulatory financial and capital reporting and appropriate tax filings. They manage payments on behalf of the business, payroll, pensions and process staff expenses. They also provide full Board support on all finance matters, including support to business development initiatives as well as financial modelling to support decision making.

The Tax team (incorporating both the Group Tax and Product and Investment Tax teams) sits within the wider Finance Department and provides support to the business on all tax issues impacting the Baillie Gifford Group and its managed investment funds.

Purpose of RoleThis role offers an excellent opportunity to join the Product & Investment Tax team, reporting to the Senior Tax Manager (Product & Investment Tax). The role will be primarily focused on the oversight of tax compliance, reporting and investor tax reporting for Baillie Gifford's investment funds, which include equities (both public and private markets), fixed income and multi-asset portfolios.

You will provide valuable expertise and support to the business, help strengthen Baillie Gifford's tax processes and controls by integrating technology and automation and collaborate closely with colleagues in Investment Operations to improve and manage the oversight of Baillie Gifford's investment funds.Responsibilities
  • Manage the oversight of direct tax compliance services outsourced to TPAs and tax advisers with regards to Baillie Gifford's investment funds in US, Canada, Ireland, Cayman Islands and Luxembourg.
  • Provide support and oversight of certain tax responsibilities performed by Investment Operations teams for Baillie Gifford's investment funds in the UK.
  • Manage the oversight of investor tax reporting for Baillie Gifford's investment funds in Ireland, US, Canada, Cayman Islands and Luxembourg.
  • Contribute to an effective tax governance, risk and controls framework for Baillie Gifford's managed investment funds.
  • Work with Investment Operations teams to drive forward continuous improvements in tax compliance and investor tax reporting processes and controls, using technology and automation.
  • Assist with firmwide projects impacting Baillie Gifford's investment funds as required.
  • Provide advice and oversight to Investment Operations teams with respect to AEoI/FATCA requirements impacting Baillie Gifford's investment funds. 
  • Stay abreast of relevant global tax changes in market practice, legislation, and regulation and advise business areas of any implications that may arise.
  • Maintain and develop external networks (e.g., tax advisers, industry bodies etc.). 
  • Reporting to relevant fund boards as required.
  • Provide tax training to other teams as required.
  • Provide support and guidance to the wider Product & Investment Tax team as required.

Qualifications:

  • Completed relevant professional accounting (CA or equivalent), tax (CTA) or legal qualification.

Your knowledge and experience:

  • You will have an asset management tax background with exposure to tax compliance, accounting and investor tax reporting.
  • Exposure to US taxes or investor tax reporting for limited partnerships (private markets funds) and/or US funds would be an advantage, though not essential.
  • A keen interest in improving processes using technology and automation.
  • Management and oversight of service providers.
     

The type of candidate that we're looking for:

We are looking for a Tax Manager with an asset management background from industry or professional practice who is experienced in the tax compliance, reporting, and investor tax reporting of investment funds. A self-starter, you will bring expertise and support to the business, help strengthen Baillie Gifford's tax processes and controls by integrating technology and automation and collaborate closely with colleagues in Investment Operations to improve and manage the oversight of Baillie Gifford's investment funds. The ideal candidate will be confident in working independently but also able to build relationships both within the firm and with external service providers. A commitment to driving technological efficiencies and enhancing existing processes will be essential, and experience of the US taxes or investor tax reporting for limited partnerships (private market funds) and/or US funds would be a distinct advantage.
