Aecon Nuclear currently is undertaking efforts to replace key components at the Darlington and Bruce Power plants as a part of each respective Life Extension Program to allow operation for another 40+ years. The scope of work includes the removal and replacement of calandria tubes, pressure tubes, feeders, and steam generators as well as technical development, construction management and trade labour.

Aecon Nuclear is also currently at the forefront of the next generation of Nuclear Power in Canada developing the construction plan and manufacturing details for the new SMR facility in Darlington, new build CANDU reactors among other exciting nuclear industry efforts.

The COE Mechanical Designer position is a salary position to support the welding initiatives of the Aecon Nuclear Centre of Excellence (COE) department.  This department is responsible for three basic areas critical to welding within the company:

1.     Developing, administering, and maintaining the welding program at a corporate level
2.     Supporting new and in process project activities
3.     Performing R&D, proposal work and supporting business development/proposals initiatives
Staying at the forefront of welding technology is key to ensuring that Aecon welding activities maintain the high level of quality that is required in the nuclear industry.  Additionally, ensuring that Aecon leverages the latest available technologies to remain competitive in the marketplace will provide further confidence and opportunities for future business development.  The welding center of excellence is a self-managed department which operates as a dedicated body within Aecon to be able to provide internal welding services to Aecon, as well as contract services to external customers.

What You'll Do Here 

Completes mechanical design efforts related to welding, automation, fabrication and construction tasksAssist in developing, troubleshooting, designing, testing and training with various types of welding tooling and/or equipmentTracking the day-to-day operations within the COE welding facility with respect to deliverable obligationsSupport of contract proposal efforts and review of customer supplied technical dataInputting purchase requisition data to procure custom tooling and equipmentInterface with vendors to clarify and provide technical feedback/input during procurementGenerate project status reports for internal management and for customers as required

What You Bring To The Team

College and/or University degree in Engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience, specifically mechanical, materials, mechatronics, welding & robotics and other such technical programs with an emphasis on weldingMinimum 2 years of industry welding, or manufacturing experiencePractical hands on experience with manufacturing tools and welding is an assetFamiliar with welding principles is preferred.  (Basics of arc welding, types of welding etc.)Familiar with robotics or comparable semi-automated and mechanized machinery is an assetPrevious design experience with tools, fixtures and simple rigging is an asset.Able to produce solid models and 2D manufacturing drawings in Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor or an equivalent CAD package.Intermediate to expert proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft WordOrganizational skills to handle multiple tasks within a high-pressure environmentExcellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)Ability to work effectively with all levels of management and employeesWillingness for continuous learning and advancement of technical knowledgeDetail oriented and passionateMust possess valid G driver's license and have access to a vehicleTakes pride in work to strive for excellence and instill this mindset onto othersA passion for welding is an assetHave a willingness to mentor and share knowledgePractices a strong safety cultureMust have a positive attitude to develop and test new solutions to solve a variety of technical welding issuesThe ability to think "outside of the box" is an assetResults oriented, takes ownership of tasks assignedStrong problem solving and trouble shooting skillsStrong interpersonal and teamwork skillsStrong written and oral communication skillsWillingness to want to continuously learn, try new approaches, experiment with new technologies and push the envelope related to welding, manufacturing, machinery and tooling developmentExperience with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project is an assetAbility to maintain active schedule tracking and resource management initiativesApplied knowledge of Project Management and Project Controls principles an assetApplied knowledge of the "Earned Value" principles an assetApplied knowledge of cost engineering / cost control is an asset
