Job Description Summary
Join us at GE Vernova Grid Software to be part of the team leading the digital transformation of the energy market. As the world's energy sector moves away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy sources, industrial companies are challenged with addressing this transition in transformative ways.
Digitization will be key to making power-generating assets more efficient and the electric grid more secure and resilient. Our Geospatial products play a critical role in this transformation by supporting the design, modelling and maintenance of electric, gas and telecommunication networks. For more information on our strategy, check out: GridOS Overview.
You will be a part of our Grid Software Engineering team, an Agile organization with a flexible working environment, where we are always looking to innovate our products and the processes and technologies we use. Our current focus is on leveraging our long history of Geospatial experience and expertise building client-server products, and evolving those products and tech stacks to modern cloud-based mapping and analytics micro-services.
We are seeking to hire people who are passionate about technology, enjoy solving challenging problems and value the positive impact it makes to our customers. We are looking to grow our current team to meet these customer needs and will use your technical expertise and problem-solving abilities to innovate complex solutions.
As a Postgres Engineer you will work closely with your product development peers in fast-paced Agile development teams enhancing our data products and ensuring our product deployments are scalable, high-performing, and robust.
Job Description
In this role, you will:
- Design, implement, and optimise PostgreSQL database schemas and stored procedures to support versioned data control features.
- Enhance PostgreSQL deployments with a focus on scalability, fault tolerance, and high availability.
- Build and maintain automated deployment pipelines for database changes using tools such as Flyway, Liquibase, or custom scripts.
- Profile and tune PostgreSQL performance at both the query and system level (e.g. indexes, vacuum strategies, connection pooling).
- Collaborate with software developers to integrate PostgreSQL improvements into application features using Agile methodologies.
- Implement and monitor replication, partitioning, backup, and recovery strategies for production-grade environments.
- Contribute to internal standards, documentation, and best practices for PostgreSQL usage across teams.
- Participate in design discussions and provide expert input into architecture decisions related to data storage, indexing, and versioning strategies.
Education Qualification
- Proven hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including advanced SQL, query optimisation, and internal tuning.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL internals: indexing strategies, planner behaviour, partitioning, vacuum/analyze, WAL, etc.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, Terraform).
- Experience designing scalable data architectures in high-volume OLTP environments.
- Proficient in scripting/programming languages such as Python, Bash, or SQL.
- Experience in Agile development teams, preferably using Scrum or Kanban.
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related STEM discipline.
Prefered Bonus Skills
- Experience implementing versioned data storage models or temporal tables.
- Familiarity with PostGIS, logical replication, or custom extensions.
- Exposure to containerised Postgres environments (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools such as pg_stat_statements, Prometheus, Grafana.
- Understanding of data governance, auditability, and change tracking in regulated environments.
Soft Skills
- Strong communication and collaboration skills — able to translate database issues to non-specialists.
- A proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and automation.
- Able to take ownership of complex technical problems and see them through to resolution.
