Laboratory Technician – Soil

We are looking for a full-time Laboratory Technician to support our Laboratory Manager in our soil, plant and fertiliser analysis laboratory in March, Cambridgeshire.
This is a permanent role with an immediate start for the right candidate.
The position combines routine analytical testing with hands-on involvement in research and product development for our fertiliser range. If you have experience with ICP-OES or agricultural laboratory work, this role offers a unique opportunity to develop your skills in a fast-growing, innovative business.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations
- Assist with day-to-day running of the soil and plant analysis laboratory
- Prepare, process, and analyse soil, plant and water samples
- Operate and maintain analytical instruments including Thermo Fisher ICP-OES
- Conduct pH testing, EC testing, and sample extractions
- Perform nematode counts and microscopy work
- Ensure accurate data entry, QA compliance, and follow laboratory protocols
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment
Research & Product Development
- Support trials and research projects for fertiliser and plant nutrition products
- Assist in developing new formulations and testing nutrient uptake
- Record experimental data, summarise findings, and present results to the team
- Participate in development of plant immune-response and diagnostic testing
Additional Duties
- Work closely with the Laboratory Manager on optimisation and quality improvements
- Communicate results and technical information clearly in written and spoken English
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience using ICP-OES or similar analytical chemistry instrumentation
- Previous laboratory experience (soil, agricultural, analytical, or environmental lab preferred)
- Good organisational and time-management skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Confident written and spoken English
- Ability to follow scientific procedures and quality standards
- Full UK driving licence
- Proficient with basic IT (Excel, sample logging systems, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant field (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Agronomy, Soil Science, Environmental Science)
- Experience with agricultural or plant science testing
- Experience with microscopy or nematode identification
- Interest in plant nutrition, agronomy, or fertiliser development
