London, Greater London, United Kingdom Better Dairy Full time £40,000 - £70,000 per year

About Us
At Better Dairy, we are dedicated to harnessing the bioactive components of milk to create ingredients uniquely suited to our bodies and needs. Our proprietary precision fermentation technology enables us to create nutritious and sustainable dairy ingredients that are biologically indistinguishable from their traditional counterparts, all without relying on animals or harming our planet. These can then become the foundation of a new generation of products, from infant formula to dietary supplements - setting a new benchmark for science-based nutrition

The Role
We're searching for an Associate Scientist with hands-on laboratory experience in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, or biotechnology to join our mission to create a more sustainable future. The successful candidate will be responsible for undertaking experiments and independently performing analytical assays for the characterisation of recombinant protein. You will report to and work closely with a Senior Analytical Scientist who will design experiments and develop analytical methods you will be working on. This pivotal role provides an exceptional opportunity to contribute to a diverse range of R&D projects spanning synthetic biology, bioprocessing, and product development. It represents an exciting prospect for enhancing technical expertise, particularly in the application of analytical techniques.

The successful candidate will have a pioneering spirit, be well suited to working in a start-up environment, and appreciate the synergistic solutions to challenges that interdisciplinary teams generate.

Responsibilities

  • Execute routine experiments, meticulously analyzing and interpreting the resulting data, using this insight to generate informative reports.
  • Implement standard analytical methodologies, encompassing protein tools and immunoassays.
  • Working independently to conduct analytical assays pertinent to fermentation processes for the development of recombinant protein.
  • Prepare and routinely analyze samples, with a specific focus on proteins such as Osteopontin (OPN) and other novel target proteins, and articulate key findings with precision.
  • Maintain scrupulous records and comprehensive documentation of experimental outcomes within an electronic lab notebook system.
  • Draft and contribute to QC documents within a laboratory environment.
  • Regularly present experimental findings and insights to diverse cross-functional teams.
  • Offer analytical support for ad-hoc projects and tasks as required.

*Required Experience*

  • BSc or MSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biotechnology, in addition to a minimum of 1-year of strong laboratory experience in the field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in various protein analytical techniques, including HPLC and other advanced characterization methods.
  • Strong understanding of liquid chromatography principles and diverse protein detection methodologies.
  • The ability to accurately assess target molecules within complex biological matrices.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel (and similar software) for comprehensive data analysis.
  • Exceptional organizational and planning ability with the capacity to work autonomously, managing workload to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, while maintaining a proactive stance in engaging with managers and team members.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and robust problem-solving acumen.
  • A proactive, self-motivated, and results-driven approach, coupled with an adaptable mindset for navigating ambiguous situations.
  • A proven track record of successful collaboration within dynamic cross-functional teams.

*Desirable Experience*

  • Hands-on experience with enzyme assays.
  • Familiarity with specialized chromatography software.
  • A robust understanding of protein analytics within fermentation processes.
