Bristol Tower Hill, United Kingdom SLR Consulting Full time £60,000 - £110,000 per year

SLR's Engineering & Design team is looking to recruit an experienced engineer and project manager to focus on the development of waste management infrastructure, specifically waste transfer stations, depots, HWRCs and MRFs, but with the opportunity to be involved in wider treatment support (e.g. AD, EfW).

If successful, you will provide input and support on a wide range of interesting and challenging projects including new and innovative technologies as part of an established team that continues to excel in the sector.

The waste industry is in an exciting period of growth – legislative change and the challenges of redeveloping aging assets while maximising performance and value for money means that there is a growing need for the provision of technical consultancy support to assess existing capabilities and recommend future direction of travel. We work across our process engineering, civils and structural engineering, and sustainable waste management teams to provide our clients with a one-stop-shop from first concept through to full operation. This end to end understanding of services and infrastructure impacts allows us to support clients to develop flexible and future proofed waste management solutions.

SLR has a in-depth understanding of the waste, recycling and recovery industries, and the challenges our clients face, delivering real change in an expanding and sustainable industrial sector. We are logical thinkers with the capability to look at problems from various angles and develop innovative, practical, cost-effective solutions. You will form a key part of the team and help build data and information into knowledge and understanding.

As well as providing technical input, the role will also include contributing to business development activities and supporting other specialists on waste, waste water and recycling projects. If appointed, you would be involved in the team's wide range of projects including a number of major headline-grabbing projects developing regional waste infrastructure and advanced technological solutions to resource management. The successful candidate will report to an experienced engineer with waste management expertise and will work alongside other engineering and technical disciplines.

SLR has a strong global presence across our range of operations.  Whilst being based in the UK there are also opportunities to support SLR's other regions across the world. This role will provide an excellent opportunity to develop your career in an experienced team of engineering professionals.

Our Engineering and Design service line has expertise across a range of engineering sectors including civil, geotechnical, chemical, process, materials, and mechanical engineering, with particular expertise in solid waste management/treatment and industrial wastewater and technologies. We work with many other disciplines across SLR and on a wide range of projects in terms of their length and complexity and the team provides clients with expertise at all stages of a project from concept designs to commissioning and testing and on to performance improvement.

The role

Joining as an Associate or Principal grade Engineer, you will be expected to work independently and within a team to deliver a variety of projects. Your work will be a mixture of site-based and office/home based work including:

  • Assisting with review of third-party designs, technical proposals and operational models and writing of technical due diligence reports for funders
  • Preparing technical and procurement documentation and schematics/drawings and management of contracts through SLR's project management and owner's engineer role in construction projects
  • Assisting with preparation of models to determine facility financial/operational models
  • On-site inspection, witnessing, verification and supervision of construction, commissioning, and testing projects and troubleshooting of issues with operational plant
  • Assisting other teams within SLR with technical and process engineering aspects of diverse projects
  • Working independently and within a team to deliver projects and develop new and existing business
  • Acting as a project manager, writing proposals and managing clients and the interface with clients
  • As an experienced member of the team, you will provide and manage workload to others in the team and other disciplines.  You will be expected to mentor and coach other engineers within the team and support the growth in capability within the team

You will work with others in the process engineering team and other disciplines across the business including the Environmental Management and Compliance, Land and Water and Environmental Specialist Services Groups on a wide variety of different projects.

About you

We are seeking an ambitious engineer with a proven track record in projects for private and public sector clients across the resource and waste management lifecycle, with a focus on waste infrastructure development, and an existing network of contacts (clients, equipment suppliers and installers) that will support the continued growth of the SLR team.

You will be a Process or Civil Engineer with knowledge of site operations, emerging technologies, policy drivers, materials markets and materials / equipment specifications. Experience of leading engineering commissions from feasibility to commissioning, including services procurement, is desirable and experience of Project Management would be an advantage. Competency in facility design and the technical review of various waste handling and treatment solutions, both for new and redesigned facilities, is required along with the ability to contribute to technical specifications and document drafting.
