Lead the Future of Rail Safety with Balfour Beatty

We're seeking an outstanding Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) to join our Central Rail Systems Alliance (CRSA) – a dynamic collaboration between Network Rail, Balfour Beatty, Atkins Réalis and TSO. Together, we're reshaping the UK's track renewals industry through innovation, expertise and true partnership.

This is your opportunity to make a real impact. Based at one of our CRSA depots – Doncaster, Preston Aston or Crewe – you'll play a pivotal role across the North West, Central and Eastern rail routes, with regular travel to keep you connected to our teams on the ground.

What you'll be doing

As Head of HSW, you'll be the driving force behind our Zero Harm vision, ensuring we not only meet but exceed operational standards.

Working closely with the Alliance Operations Director, you'll:

  • Champion compliance with UK legislation, our Business Management System (BMS), and Network Rail's health and safety requirements.
  • Provide expert guidance and technical support to deliver outstanding health and safety performance across all projects.
  • Oversee contractual and regulatory obligations, conducting inspections and advising our H&S Advisors to maintain excellence.
  • Partner with work-winning teams to craft compelling health and safety responses for tenders, including enhancement projects.

Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (IOSH/IEMA) or working towards.
  • Educated to Diploma/Degree/HNC level
  • Rail and/or Construction industry experience and in particular CDM
  • Influencing and persuasion skills
  • Analytical skills with an attention to detail
  • Motivational, leadership and coaching skills
  • Experienced incident investigator
  • Experience of reviewing and producing HSES reports to executive level
  • Must have prior experience of providing leadership and support to operational and functional teams and of working at a senior level;
  • Must have prior experience of developing proactive relationships with challenging customers

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • Experience in rail construction environment
  • Training qualification
