Awerian is a research and technology development company based near Cambridge where scientists and engineers collaborate on projects for customers in UK Defence and Homeland Security. As an intern at Awerian, you will be part of our team working at the forefront of an innovation race to defend and protect the UK from the latest technological and cyber threats.
Our summer internship will give you the opportunity to contribute to our interdisciplinary teams, working alongside consultants from a diverse range of academic backgrounds – Engineers to Physicists and Mathematicians, to experience technology consulting in action. Over the course of your placement, you will contribute directly to exciting projects to get hands-on, practical experience and gain insight about what a career in innovative research and technology development can offer.
At Awerian, we value initiative and curiosity, and our non-hierarchical culture gives you the freedom to explore projects that reflect your own interests. By the end of the internship, you will have first-hand experience of how engineering and science are applied in a commercial context, as well as a clear sense of what it's like to work in a fast-paced, inventive environment like ours. Our internships are also a great pathway into a career, as we consider all our interns for graduate roles.
Requirements
When considering applications, we are looking for individuals who:
- Have a strong academic background in a quantitative technical subject. Applicants should be studying for a degree, and on track to be awarded a 2.1 or first, in one or more of the following (or related) areas:
- Physics
- Engineering
- Mathematics
- Computer Science
- Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
We're keen to hear from strong applicants across all these areas and would tailor projects to suit the individual's background.
- Have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate study by the time of the start of the internship (students at the beginning of their second year are very welcome to apply).
- Are driven, proactive and curious, with a strong sense of personal responsibility; we want people who love to learn and think creatively to understand the root of a challenging problem.
- Are collaborative and adaptable, able to build relationships, and comfortable navigating a dynamic professional environment independently and within a team.
- (Ideally) Show evidence of applying their technical expertise to research, practical applications, and/or developing new technology. This may be through university, previous work experience, side projects, or extra-curricular activities.
The length of this internship can be flexible, but we ask for minimum commitment of 8 weeks, starting in July 2026.
