The University of Dundee is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Information Governance Officer to take a leading role within a busy, strategically focused Information Governance function. Reporting to the Director of Legal, this is a senior post with responsibility for embedding best practice, ensuring compliance, and supporting the University's teaching, research, administrative and partnership activities.

We welcome applications from candidates with substantial professional expertise in information governance, preferably supported by a law degree, an accredited information governance qualification, or a practising certificate as a solicitor.

The Role

The Information Governance team oversees Freedom of Information, Data Protection, statutory compliance, and the compliance oversight of University records and information. As Senior Information Governance Officer, you will:

  • Lead the development and implementation of a robust information governance and compliance strategy.
  • Ensure governance requirements are embedded across research projects, procurement processes, and domestic and international partnerships.
  • Deliver best practice across all aspects of information compliance: DPIAs, data sharing and processing agreements, privacy notices, FOI, EIRs and SAR handling.
  • Lead the mapping of data-processing activities and ensure appropriate risk management and documentation, working closely with Legal, Procurement and Digital & Technology Services.
  • Lead the University's response to potential data breaches, including training, incident management and follow-up.
  • Develop, update and implement policies and procedures for information governance.
  • Design and deliver staff training on information governance and personal data management, including guidance materials and digital learning.
  • Create and maintain an effective SharePoint site for policy dissemination and resources.
  • Oversee proper management of University records (digital and physical), including metadata, retention schedules, access controls, and research data processes in M365, SharePoint and Teams.
  • Work with the University Archives to ensure long-term digital preservation of permanent records.
  • Line-manage Information Governance Officers and ensure timely, high-quality responses across the team's remit.
  • Work collaboratively with the Legal Directorate to understand and implement legislative changes.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when managing sensitive matters.
  • Undertake additional duties as required by senior management.

Culture & Ways of Working

We are a small, highly collaborative legal and information governance team, and the postholder will be expected to contribute to a professional, respectful and solutions-focused working environment. The role involves managing sensitive issues, tight deadlines and engagement across the University, so the ability to work well with others is essential.
