Specialist Respiratory Nurse (Band 6) | Community Service | £30 per hour (Weekdays) + Weekend Enhancements
Location: Community – Barnsley Area
Hours: Up to 37.5 per week
Contract: 6-month assignment (ASAP start)
Pay: £30 per hour weekdays (umbrella) + enhanced weekend rates
Shifts:
- Weekdays: 7.5-hour shifts (08:00–16:00 or 12:00–20:00)
- Weekends: 12-hour shifts (08:00–20:00)
- 7-day service coverage
About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Band 6 Specialist Respiratory Nurse to join a highly respected Breathe Community Service supporting adults across Barnsley living with respiratory conditions. This is an excellent opportunity for a clinician with strong assessment skills, community experience, and a passion for delivering high-quality respiratory care.
You'll manage your own caseload, deliver advanced clinical assessment and treatment, and work closely with the wider neighbourhood MDT—including nursing, therapy, mental health, social care, and primary care teams—to ensure seamless, patient-centred care.
Key Responsibilities
Work autonomously to assess and manage a defined caseload across community clinics and home visits
Provide specialist respiratory support for patients on rehabilitation pathways, Long Term Oxygen Therapy, nebuliser therapy, post-COVID pathways, and those requiring End of Life care
Use advanced respiratory assessment skills to triage, assess and manage complex cases
Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans promoting self-management and preventing unnecessary hospital admissions
Contribute to early supported discharge following acute respiratory admissions
Provide targeted support to GP practices with high respiratory caseloads
Participate in MDT meetings and collaborate with primary and secondary care teams
Support induction, education, and supervision of junior staff and students
Deliver specialised education programmes to help drive respiratory best practice
Maintain accurate clinical records in line with NMC and organisational standards
Work within safeguarding, clinical governance, NICE, BTS and Trust policy frameworks
Uphold Trust values: honesty, respect, compassion, improvement, and patient-centred care
What We're Looking For
Registered Nurse with NMC PIN
Minimum 12 months experience working with respiratory patients (community or acute)
Strong assessment and decision-making ability
Confident working autonomously in the community
Experience managing complex cases
Excellent communication and MDT collaboration skills
Commitment to safeguarding, high-quality care, and ongoing professional development
Car driver essential due to the community nature of the role
