Leadership To be an independent financially qualified voice on Council To chair the Risk and Assurance Committee, and participate (as Chair or a member) in other Committees as required To provide strong and effective commercial, risk and financial assurance and advice to ensure that NHUCS risks and finances are managed effectively in line with statutory and NHS requirements. Contribute to effective decision making and constructive debate, concentrating on key matters and the review of complex and/or contentious issues Provide support and advice to the Chair as requested, particularly with reference to financial and commercial risk management, and on the general operations of the organisation Strategy Work with Council members in developing and promoting NHUCS vision, values, aims and strategic objectives, challenging conventional approaches and driving change forward when needed. Proactively operate as a member of the Council in the decision-making process and ensure that full and complete consideration has been given to all options during the process. Review and evaluate present and future opportunities, threats and risk in the external environment and current and future strengths, weaknesses and risk to NHUC.

Input to, and offer support of, the strategic agenda and objectives and to maintain knowledge and work effectively with the senior team in a support, challenge and assurance role as a member of the non-executive team. Operations Take an active and effective role as a member of the Council to ensure the executives have developed clear objectives to deliver the agreed plans and regularly review performance against these objectives. Encourage the best use of resources and the development of effective risk and performance management processes. Promote appropriate processes and procedures to deliver high standards of professional, clinical, administrative and personal behaviours across NHUC.

Influence and advance the future strategic direction of the client ensuring healthcare treatment targets are met, whilst maximising benefits for patients. Be aware of and understand relevant, regulatory and central Government policies. Be able to understand and challenge high level financial and commercial information. Corporate Responsibilities Ensuring high levels of probity and value for money Ensuring high standards of governance Ensuring that all health standards are met Effective use of resources within appropriate financial controls Maintaining financial viability Promote the highest standards of corporate and clinical governance and other regulatory requirements and best practice, where appropriate, adhering to the Nolan Principles.

Communication and Relationships Be an ambassador for NHUC, be knowledgeable and aware of local issues. Uphold the values of NHUC, be an appropriate role model, and ensure as a Council member you promote equality and diversity for all its patients, staff and other stakeholders. Develop high level relationships with key stakeholders as required, ensuring that the interests of all stakeholders are fairly balanced at all times. Ideally have a track record of building credibility with stakeholders that has resulted in increased stability. Key Skills Communication skills a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals Excellent written competency. Experience Significant financial and commercial experience gained within the public or private sectors Must hold a relevant financial qualification Excellent understanding of the regulatory regime particularly with regard to external and internal audit and risk management Experience at non-executive or trustee level within the public sector (Desirable) Experience of working within a Board environment
