Our engineering culture champions autonomy, collaboration, and innovation. Your initiatives will have far-reaching impact, connecting with mobile engineers across the organization. This role is critical to:

  • Ensuring Product Stability & Scalability: Providing foundational support and guidance across our diverse Android product portfolio, ensuring consistency, reliability, and seamless operation for Register, Android Terminal, SumUp Go, and the Merchant app.

What you'll do:

  • Strategic Impact: Lead the charge in shaping the core experience for both merchants and our internal Android developers, directly contributing to SumUp's ambitious Android product roadmap.
  • Technical Leadership: Architect, develop, and maintain critical tools, frameworks, and infrastructure that significantly enhance the consistency, scalability, and reliability of our mobile apps, ensuring no negative impact across our distinct Android products.
  • Performance & Efficiency: Spearhead initiatives in CI/CD systems, advanced developer tooling, and performance optimizations to dramatically streamline mobile development processes and reduce build times for our growing team.
  • Codebase Evolution: Proactively tackle technical debt, improve code health, and introduce best practices to a complex, mature codebase, ensuring its longevity and adaptability.
  • Mentorship & Collaboration: Provide invaluable technical guidance and mentorship, fostering a culture of excellence and knowledge sharing across our Android engineering chapter, often navigating legacy components and unknown technologies.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Own critical technical projects from ideation through to successful implementation and impact measurement, ensuring they align with strategic business needs and uphold the highest technical standards.

You'll be great for this position if you have:

  • Deep Android Expertise: 5+ years of professional Android development experience, with a proven track record in Kotlin and modern Android frameworks.
  • CI/CD Mastery: Extensive experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Fastlane) and a passion for solving build time challenges and improving deployment efficiency at scale.
  • Architectural Acumen: A deep understanding of testing methodologies, modern architecture, and design patterns, coupled with a strategic mindset to balance immediate needs with long-term architectural vision.
  • Developer-Centric Passion: A genuine passion for developer experience, with a history of creating impactful tools and improving workflows for large engineering teams.
  • Complex Codebase Navigation: Proven ability to navigate, understand, and significantly improve complex, mature, and often unowned codebases, demonstrating adaptability and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional Communication: Strong collaboration skills and a natural ability to mentor and guide other engineers, effectively communicating complex technical concepts across diverse teams and handling context switching with ease.
  • Bonus Points: Experience with modularized codebases, building and maintaining internal tooling, or SDK development in a multi-product environment.
