Car Mechanic Job DescriptionJob SummaryWe are seeking an experienced and diligent Car Mechanic (Automotive Technician) to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vehicles to ensure they run safely, efficiently, and reliably for our customers. The role requires a strong technical aptitude, excellent problem-solving skills, and a commitment to quality workmanship and customer service. Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose Faults: Inspect vehicles and use mechanical testing and computerized diagnostic equipment to identify problems and determine the required repairs.
  • Perform Repairs and Maintenance: Conduct a wide range of repair and maintenance tasks, including oil changes, brake repairs, engine and transmission work, and suspension issues.
  • Provide Estimates: Accurately estimate the time and cost for repairs and part replacements, and communicate this information clearly to customers for approval.
  • Test Vehicles: Road test vehicles after repairs to ensure mechanical soundness and confirm that all issues have been resolved effectively.
  • Maintain Records: Keep comprehensive and accurate digital records of all services performed, parts used, and the vehicle's condition.
  • Manage Inventory: Monitor stock levels of parts and equipment and assist with ordering new supplies as needed.
  • Adhere to Safety Standards: Ensure the work environment is clean, organised, and safe at all times, complying with all health and safety regulations.
  • Communicate Effectively: Liaise with customers and other team members, explaining complex technical issues in an understandable manner and providing excellent customer service.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Education/Certification: A minimum of a Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an advanced apprenticeship (NVQ or SVQ equivalent) is typically required. An MOT tester qualification is an advantage.
  • Experience: Proven experience working as a car mechanic or automotive technician, with a strong understanding of vehicle systems (engines, brakes, electrical, AC, etc.).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in using a variety of hand and power tools, as well as computerised diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities to identify and resolve complex mechanical issues efficiently.
  • Physical Stamina: The ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting heavy components and working in various positions (bending, crouching, lying down).
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication and customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Licence: A valid driver's licence is often required.
