Industrial Placement Student

You'll support the purchasing and supply chain activities behind innovative new products — helping bring ideas from concept to production.
This placement is ideal for students who want to understand how sourcing, cost analysis, supplier management and engineering come together inside a major manufacturing environment.
Key Criteria
- Must be undertaking a Bachelor's degree and eligible for a 12-month placement year starting in 2026.
- Studying a relevant discipline such as Engineering, Supply Chain, Procurement, Business, Economics or a related analytical field.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Confident using IT tools including Excel and databases.
- Good analytical ability with an interest in data, cost, or supply chain processes.
- Proactive attitude, well organised and able to take ownership of tasks.
- Able to collaborate with suppliers, engineers and cross-functional teams.
- Able to work on-site in Darlington, UK.
You'll join the Technical Sourcing team — the group responsible for purchasing and supplier engagement during the early stages of product development. This team works with global suppliers, engineering, quality and new product introduction functions.
What You'll Work On
- Supporting new product development projects
- Helping maintain project notes, databases, trackers and reports
- Monitoring project KPIs and working with the Project Lead to resolve issues
- Managing prototype part procurement
- Supporting cost reduction and capacity planning activities
- Analysing supplier data to identify cost saving opportunities
- Working with suppliers on delivery, quality and risk mitigation
- Collaborating with the Supplier Quality team and wider purchasing functions
This role gives you a genuine taste of procurement, sourcing and NPI (new product introduction) in a real corporate setting.
