The V&A is recruiting for a Conservator (Textiles) to join the Textile Conservation Team on a fixed term contract. The successful applicant will primarily support the delivery of the museum's programme of loans out to other museums. The work will be varied with opportunities to work on a range of different object types and will include conservation treatments, costume mounting and some project management.
You will undertake practical preventive and interventive conservation on textiles from the Museum's collections, including assessment and technical examination, and advise on the best handling, storage, and safe display of textile objects. You will be required to have a good practical knowledge of textiles and related materials, their structure, degradation processes and conservation techniques, and the ability to evaluate conservation problems, develop solutions and produce practical work and documentation of a high standard. Some costume mounting experience would be an advantage.
The Textile Conservation Team works closely with the Costume Display Team and collaborates with specialists in other V&A Conservation studios to treat mixed-media objects. We also work with the Conservation Operations Team, the Preventive Conservation Team, the Conservation Science Team, and other stakeholders such as Technical Services, Curators, and external borrowers.
