Job Description

Junior Researcher

Altera Recruitment is partnering with an innovative clean-energy technology company developing breakthrough processes that convert difficult waste streams into low-carbon fuels and carbon-rich by-products. Their patented systems enable carbon-negative energy production and are now entering a major scale-up phase following new investment and successful grant funding. This is an opportunity to join a small, fast-growing team shaping the future of sustainable energy.

This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career researcher seeking hands-on experience in an R&D setting. You'll work closely with the Lead Chemist to support day-to-day laboratory operations, run analytical equipment, assist with prototype testing and contribute to ongoing research projects.

Key Responsibilities of the Junior Researcher include:
  • Support laboratory operations, including COSHH updates, stock checks and equipment scheduling.
  • Prepare and analyse gas, liquid and solid samples using a range of chemistry techniques.
  • Assist with experimental trials on thermochemical and purification systems.
  • Help interpret analytical data using software tools and modelling packages.
  • Contribute to technical reporting for internal projects, collaborations and funded programmes.
Requirements:
  • Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field, with 0–2 years' experience.
  • Practical, hands-on approach with strong attention to detail and confidence following laboratory procedures.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within technical teams.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and able to learn laboratory/analytical software quickly.
  • Familiarity with analytical equipment, COSHH or risk assessment processes, or a willingness to develop these skills.
What's on Offer:
  • A salary of £28,000-£32,000, depending on experience.
  • Share Options.
  • Training in chemistry techniques and analytical equipment.
  • Opportunity to contribute to pioneering carbon-negative technologies.
  • Supportive, collaborative working environment with strong development pathways.
  • Competitive salary, flexible hours, health benefits and pension scheme.
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays + birthday leave, team days, free parking and access to company e-bikes.

If you're excited by the idea of working on cutting-edge clean-energy research and want to grow your skills in a dynamic, mission-driven environment, we'd love to hear from you.
