Research Associate in Probability

About the role

The proposed project is entitled "Large-scale universal behaviour of the Ising model". Candidates will also be encouraged to work on other projects alongside this.

The successful candidate will join Prob-, a leading research group consisting of 12 permanent academic staff, 3 postdocs and around 12 PhD students. There are weekly seminars during term-time and regular reading groups and graduate courses.

About you

Candidates should have a PhD in probability or a related discipline. They should be interested in research topics aligned with the work of Christoforos Panagiotis, such as percolation, the Ising model and other spin systems, self-avoiding walks, or statistical physics more broadly. Successful candidates will be encouraged both to continue existing research directions and to initiate new projects, including collaborations with Christoforos Panagiotis and other members of Prob-. They should have the potential to publish in high-quality journals.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

This is a fixed-term position for 24 months, to start between 1 May 2026 and 1 September 2026
