Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom Chipletti Full time

Company Description

Chipletti, a UK fabless semiconductor start-up working on 3D stacked SRAM chiplets, is looking for a PhD student intern to join a 3-month research placement focused on software modelling of next-generation memory systems for high performance cloud computing platforms.

Role Description

This is a 3-month remote role for a PhD Research Intern. The intern will play a key role in supporting the technical feasibility and early architectural modelling of chiplet-based cache systems. This position is suited to a candidate with strong research skills in computer architecture, memory systems, or semiconductor design, and an interest in the intersection between technical innovation and commercial application. You will have strong C++ skills and experience working with simulators and complex codebases.

The intern will work closely with a small technical team with backgrounds in processor architecture, semiconductor IP licensing, and system modelling, as well as external collaborators.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Currently enrolled [or recently completed] in a PhD program in Computer Architecture, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Semiconductor Design, or related field.
  • Strong understanding of memory hierarchies, cache systems, and high-performance computing architectures.
  • Experience with modelling and simulation tools such as Gem5, CACTI, McPAT, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in Python, C/C++, or SystemC for modelling and performance analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to work independently and deliver structured outputs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, suitable for both technical and commercial audiences.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with 3D integration technologies, chiplet interfaces (e.g., UCIe, BoW), or advanced packaging techniques.
  • Knowledge of HPC workloads and performance profiling.
  • Experience contributing to academic or industrial research projects.
  • Interest in commercialisation and IP strategy within the semiconductor sector.
