About Us

At Babcock, we're working to create a safe and secure world, together. If you join us, you can play your part as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at one of our Babcock sites.

The role

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll play a pivotal role in designing and optimising marine auxiliary systems for complex naval shipbuilding projects. This is your chance to influence design quality, improve build efficiency, and integrate emerging technologies into next-generation vessels. Your work will directly contribute to national security and help shape the future of naval engineering.

Day-to-day, you'll have the following responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with naval standards, classification society rules, and defence-specific requirements
  • Produce and review engineering outputs, including P&IDs, schematics, and equipment specifications
  • Conduct hazard assessments and FMEAs
  • Provide engineering support during production and commissioning, resolving non-compliances and integration issues

This role is full time and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home.

Essential experience of the Senior Mechanical Engineer:

  • Proven experience in naval or marine engineering projects, with strong knowledge of auxiliary systems design and integration
  • Ability to deliver engineering solutions to time, cost, and quality standards
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience using engineering tools (e.g., CAD, FlowMASTER, FluidFlow).

Qualifications for the Senior Mechanical Engineer:

  • Degree in Marine, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline (Master's desirable)
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership with a relevant professional institution (e.g., RINA, IMechE, IMarEst, IET)
