About The Role
You will join the Physician Associate faculty within our respiratory department, designed for registered PAs with drive and passion to develop their careers and challenge themselves in modern, state-of-the-art facilities, as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team. Our new bespoke hospital facilities are complemented by excellent training and education centres.

These posts will be tailored to experienced PAs and will be working within our respiratory department providing unrivalled opportunities to learn and progress whilst offering the best possible care for our patients.

As a core member of your team you will work closely with senior and trainee clinical colleagues under the direction of the supervising consultant providing assessment and care across all patients within the service and in line with Trust guidelines and policies.

Main duties
Clinical

  • To manage patients within a defined specialty as determined by the supervising consultant
  • To take a clear, concise history from patients by assessing their health and well-being. Complete necessary documentation ensuring all entries are accurate, legible, timely and in accordance with agreed professional standards and to present findings to consultant or specialty registrar.
  • To perform physical examinations, order appropriate investigations, interpret investigations and formulate a list of differential diagnosis
  • To perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures (subject to appropriate training and experience). These include, but not exhaustively:

  • Venepuncture

  • Cannulation
  • Arterial blood gases
  • Injections
  • ECG
  • Urethral catheterisation
  • Nasogastric tube insertion
  • Ascitic tap and paracentesis

  • Instruct and counsel patients and their relatives with regard to mental and physical health issues.

  • To use significant observations made during patients assessment and use these to develop and initiate care and treatment recommendations and devise plans of care.
  • Interpret and utilise data and clinical findings, including patient physiological observations to develop/escalate and seek support to implement treatment plans for patients requiring urgent intervention including fluid resuscitation, oxygen therapy, antibiotics or other urgent treatment.
  • In emergency situations, administer life support to support life-saving procedures. Procedures include defibrillation, administration of whole blood, oxygen and medications.

  • To attend consultant/and or specialty registrar ward rounds.
  • To co-ordinate patients on ambulatory care pathways.
  • To consolidate specialist skills, knowledge and expertise in clinical practice and apply this in the supervision and training of others within the Trust.
  • To contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.
  • To work within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of acute medical care to patients on a day to day basis.
  • To support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries.

Advocate

  • Ensure that high standards of patient care are given and maintained and act when standards are not being met.
  • Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care.
  • Act as the patients advocate and ambassador respecting patient confidentiality and privacy with respect for diverse cultural backgrounds and requirements.
  • Take the lead when required to develop patient focused education and information.
  • Recognise, prevent and diffuse potential areas of conflict and where required take a key role in the management of the outcome.

Clinical Governance / Quality

  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
  • Disseminate good practice and knowledge by pursuing opportunities to present work at national conferences or via publications, encourage team members likewise.
  • Promote people's equality, diversity and rights.
  • Identify clinical issues and incidents within the Trust that reduce the quality of care within the specialist service brining any issues to the attention of the Matron or Service Lead.
  • Take part in activities to counter these to ensure the delivery of safe and effective care.
  • May be required to take a lead in clinical audit within the specialist area supporting others to participate and ensuring agreed results are implemented

Clinical and Educational structure and governance

  • Oversight and leadership for our PA programme resides with our Director of Medical Education.
  • Your day-to-day clinical responsibility will be to the supervising consultant and the relevant Head of Clinical Service.
  • Your line management will be through the Division structures to the Divisional Clinical Director and you will be professionally accountable to the Medical Director / the MD's Office.
  • We will provide mentoring and personal development arrangements, appropriate to the individuals joining our team
  • We will assign an educational supervisor to support appropriate professional development with the oversight of the Trust Clinical Lead for Physicians Associates and the Royal College of Medicine Tutor.
  • Pairing / buddying with junior doctor colleagues will help ensure consistent and effective working, making best use of skill-mix.

Qualifications
Essential person specification requirements

  • BA/BSc degree prior to undertaking Physician Associate course.
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Associate Training Programme.
  • On the currently available voluntary register for PA's managed by UKAPA
  • ICH GCP accreditations
  • Certified CPR provider

NB: If US Trained

  • Current and valid certification with the National Commission on Certification for Physician Associates (NCCPA)
  • Registration with the UK Managed Voluntary Register for physician Associates
  • Member of the FPA

Skills & Abilities

  • Patient assessment skills
  • Evidence of competence in a range of clinical skills and diagnostic interventions such as phlebotomy, cannulation and ECG recording.
  • Good presentation skills
