Purpose of the Role

The Control and Compute team is responsible for developing software for Motion Applied ECUs. Software running on our ECUs is both hand-coded, and auto-coded from Simulink. This role will be helping to test that software in our Hardware in the Loop environments.

We support teams within Motion Applied who develop software for F1, IndyCar and NASCAR, as well as external customers who are also involved with Formula E, WEC and other high-tech applications.

Role Dimensions

As a HIL Test Engineer, you will be responsible for helping to develop, integrate and run tests to support development of our ECU software. This spans unit testing, testing IO interfaces, all the way up to full integration testing of entire motorsport systems.

You will need to have an in-depth knowledge of MATLAB and Simulink, with the ability to develop HIL test models in Simulink. The role will also lead the automation and reporting of HIL testing.

Working within the Control & Compute team, you will work in a fast-paced and agile environment – where you will see your work being delivered to the racetrack. We follow new technologies and make use of modern software development practices and tools.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Definition of test plans and strategy in collaboration with system, hardware, and software teams.
  • Design, development, and maintenance of an automated Hardware in the Loop test environment.
  • Development of CI test environments.
  • Definition and implementation of automated test cases against system requirements.
  • Execution of system tests for software and hardware releases.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Expert knowledge of MATLAB programming and Simulink development
  • An understanding of (MATLAB) unit testing frameworks
  • Knowledge of communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet)
  • Experience of SIL and HIL test tools
  • Knowledge of continuous integration tools, e.g. Jenkins
  • Experience with software version control systems (e.g. Git)
  • First class degree or upper 2nd in Engineering, Electronics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience)

Desirable

  • Background in Motorsport/Automotive control systems and electronics
  • Experience of Speedgoat HIL test systems
  • Understanding of physical modelling (specifically automotive/motorsport)
  • Familiar with Motion Applied calibration and data acquisition tools (System Monitor, ATLAS)
  • Comfortable debugging electrical hardware and wiring harnesses
  • Experience of software verification and release processes
  • Demonstrable interest in embedded microprocessors
