Job Description: Kitchen Assistant
Position Overview
A Kitchen Assistant in a nursery plays an essential role in ensuring the daily
provision of nutritious meals and snacks for young children, supporting the overall
smooth operation of the facility's kitchen. This individual will help with food
preparation, maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene, and support
the nursery staff in delivering a safe and welcoming environment for all children.
Main Responsibilities
Assist with the preparation of healthy meals and snacks following specific
dietary requirements and allergy guidelines for children.
Keep all kitchen areas, equipment, and utensils spotlessly clean and
sanitised, maintaining strict hygiene standards.
Wash dishes, pots, and pans manually or using a dishwasher, ensuring all
items are safe and ready for use.
Safely dispose of kitchen waste, managing recycling and rubbish according to
health and safety protocols.
Help receive and correctly store food deliveries, checking labels and expiry
dates, and rotating stock as appropriate.
Follow all nursery health, safety, and food hygiene procedures, keeping
detailed records when required (for example, temperature checks and
cleaning logs).
Support nursery staff by preparing snacks and drinks for classroom activities
or special events.
Respond promptly to any spills or hazards, ensuring a safe kitchen and dining
environment for children and staff.
Key Skills and Qualities
Awareness of food allergies and willingness to learn about children's dietary
needs.
Ability to work efficiently and calmly in a busy environment, especially during
meal times.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a safe and
hygienic kitchen.
Good communication skills and a friendly, approachable manner, especially
when around children and staff.
Ability to work flexibly and support the wider nursery team as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
No formal qualifications are necessary, but experience in a kitchen or nursery
environment is an advantage.
Food hygiene and safety certificates are desirable; training can be provided
for the right candidate.
The role involves working in a child-focused environment, so safeguarding and a
willingness to undergo background checks are essential. Protective clothing and
equipment will be provided.
