Specialist in Paediatric Surgery

Cardiff CF XW, United Kingdom Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Full time £120,000 - £180,000 per year

The Paediatric Surgery Service within Cardiff and Vale UHB provides secondary and tertiary services across South Wales. There are 1,500 new outpatient referrals per year and 2,100 follow-up patients. At least 75% of these referrals are of a tertiary nature. Approximately 550 day cases are undertaken each year and the department deals with 2,100 elective and emergency admissions per annum.

The seven Consultant Paediatric Surgeons cover a 24-hour emergency service for acute surgical problems from secondary and tertiary sources. Currently this is a split-week on-call pattern. This facilitates complex handover and joint operating. Elective sessions are cancelled during the on-call week.

You will provide with senior colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals so designated, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and promotion of health.

You will provide a service providing care for infants and children with a range of elective conditions which are encompassed within the general surgery of childhood.

You will collaborate with departmental colleagues to further develop the existing services for surgical enteral feeding device insertion and common foreskin disorders.

You will collaborate with departmental colleagues to develop new services to streamline patient flow for other common paediatric surgical conditions, for example, patients requiring surgical central venous access procedures and patients with chronic constipation requiring diagnosis or exclusion of Hirschsprung's Disease.

You will assume an active role in imparting knowledge of diagnosis, treatment, and management of pertinent paediatric surgical conditions to resident doctors, nursing and operating department staff through a range of instructional methods, including clinical simulation scenarios that prioritise human factors in addition to clinical expertise

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is one of the largest Integrated Health Boards in the UK, employing over 17,000 staff, providing over 100 specialist services. Working across 6 hospital sites, we have a diverse range of career opportunities to offer. Serving over 500,000 people living in Cardiff and the Vale, we are focussed on the health and care needs of our local population whilst working with our partners to develop regional services. Together we are committed to improving health outcomes for everyone, delivering excellent care and support.

Our mission is "Living Well, Caring Well, Working Together", and our vision is that every person's chance of leading a healthy life should be equal. Our 10-year transformation and improvement strategy, Shaping Our Future Wellbeing, is our chance to work collaboratively with the public and our workforce to make our health board more sustainable for the future.

You will collaborate with colleagues to strive for excellence for the paediatric surgical patients cared for within the department through systematic audit, participation in morbidity and mortality processes, and quality improvement projects.

The holder of this post will not be included in an on-call rota and as such that will not form part of the job plan.
