Role Overview
This role requires an experienced practitioner with proven competence in both cardiac catheterisation and interventional radiology environments.
The Anaesthetic ODP/Nurse will be integral to emergency services as well, participating in an on-call rota to support urgent cases.
The position entails working a flexible shift pattern – a mix of early shifts, late shifts, extended long days, and occasional weekends – to meet the needs of the Cath Lab service.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic, highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills and a teamwork-oriented approach, committed to delivering exceptional care in a fast-paced specialist setting.
- Provide skilled assistance to the anaesthetist during induction, maintenance, and emergence from anaesthesia. This includes preparing airway devices, intubation assistance, securing invasive lines, and monitoring the patient's condition. Continuously observe patient vital signs and anaesthetic depth throughout procedures, responding promptly to any changes or signs of patient distress or instability to ensure patient safety.
- Prepare, check, and set up all anaesthetic equipment and medications prior to each procedure.
- Maintain stock of drugs and consumables, handling and administering medications, including controlled drugs, in line with hospital policies and protocols.
- Work in close collaboration with the Cath Lab multidisciplinary team – including cardiologists, interventional radiologists, anaesthetists, cardiac physiologists, radiographers, and nursing staff – to ensure seamless, high-quality patient care.
- Assist with pre-procedure preparation, confirming that patients are appropriately assessed, consented, and ready for their procedure. Participate in the safe transfer and positioning of patients onto the procedure table, ensuring pressure areas are protected and patient comfort is maintained..
- When procedures are carried out under local anaesthesia or conscious sedation, assist in the planning and delivery of safe sedation and analgesia. Work with the anaesthetist or operate under agreed sedation protocols to administer sedatives and pain relief medications as required. Continuously monitor the patient's level of consciousness, cardiorespiratory status, and comfort during sedated cases, intervening promptly if deeper sedation or adverse reactions occur. Ensure all observations and drugs given during sedation cases are meticulously documented.
- Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control standards in the Cath Lab environment. Ensure all anaesthetic and monitoring equipment is cleaned and decontaminated appropriately between cases to prevent cross-infection. Observe radiation safety protocols at all times.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical documentation for each case. Record any variances, complications, or changes in patient condition in a clear, timely manner. Ensure all records meet legal, professional, and organisational requirements for confidentiality and completeness.
- Be prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to any intra-procedure emergencies or patient deterioration. As a key team member, participate actively in resuscitation efforts in accordance with Advanced Life Support guidelines.
- Contribute to the effective day-to-day running of the Cath Lab lists. Anticipate the needs of each list by preparing necessary equipment and drugs for upcoming cases and ensuring rapid turnover between cases.
