Head of Accounts

Location: Truro or Exeter (Hybrid)

Contract: Permanent, full-time

Join Kensa and help shape the financial success of the UK's low-carbon heating future.

Kensa is leading the transformation of heating across the UK through innovative low-carbon technologies. As Head of Accounts, you will play a key role in ensuring the financial stability and integrity that powers our mission to deliver sustainable heat pump projects for communities, businesses, and the planet.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a purpose-driven, fast-paced environment and is eager to have impact at both strategic and operational levels. If you are a qualified finance professional with a track record in leading accounting functions and a passion for making a difference, we want to hear from you.

About the role

In this pivotal position, you will oversee the full spectrum of financial accounting activities, manage and develop the finance team, and work closely with senior leaders to support strategic decision-making. You'll ensure the timely delivery of management accounts, drive process optimisation, and uphold strong financial governance across the business. Your leadership will directly support projects that cut carbon emissions and make homes more affordable to heat.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of monthly management accounts for all entities, ensuring accuracy and on-time reporting.
  • Oversee financial reporting processes including trial balance, accruals, prepayments, reconciliations and audit readiness.
  • Manage daily operations of accounts payable and receivable, ensuring timely invoice processing, payments, collections and reconciliations.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and development to the finance team, fostering high performance.
  • Contribute to budgeting and forecasting, working closely with department heads to align financial plans with business strategy.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, VAT (including reverse charge), CIS and internal controls.
  • Own monthly, quarterly and annual ESG financial reporting analysis.
  • Support year-end audits and liaise with external auditors.
  • Drive continuous improvement across financial systems, processes and controls.
  • Work cross-functionally to embed finance within operational decision-making, improving efficiency and knowledge sharing.
  • Oversee debtor management and ensure the credit control strategy is effectively delivered.

What you'll bring

  • Significant experience in a senior finance role, ideally within a project-based or manufacturing environment.
  • Accounting qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ACA) or willingness to undertake further training.
  • Strong technical accounting expertise, with experience in management accounts, budgeting and audits.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-management capability.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial systems.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and communicate insights clearly.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Commercial awareness and strategic mindset (advantageous).

What's in it for you?

At Kensa, you'll join a mission-driven team working on solutions that directly impact people, communities, and the planet. Join a supportive, forward-thinking team where innovation and sustainability drive everything we do. We support our colleagues with:

  • Flexible Working: Hybrid and office-based options to suit your lifestyle.
  • Growth & Development: Opportunities to stretch your skills through meaningful, collaborative work.
  • Wellbeing Support: Free, confidential Employee Assistance Programme for you and your family.
  • Time Off: 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, rising to 30 days with service.
  • Health & Security: Private Health Insurance (after one year) and company pension.
  • Sustainable Travel: Cycle to Work Scheme to help lower your carbon footprint.
  • Community Impact: Paid volunteering days and regular team events.
  • Dog-Friendly Offices: Some of our spaces, including HQ, welcome four-legged friends.

If you're looking for a role where you can make a real impact in a purpose-driven organisation, we'd love to hear from you.

We welcome applications from all backgrounds and communities. If you need any adjustments during the application process, please let us know, we're happy to support you.

You're welcome to include a short cover note (a few paragraphs is plenty) telling us what draws you to Kensa and how your experience aligns with this role but it's optional, so please apply in the way that suits you best.
