An Opportunity to work in an 'OFSTED Rated Outstanding' Residential Childcare Team

If you would like an informal conversation with one of the Care Leadership Team to discuss this role please contact Nadine Worle on

About Us:

Mary Hare educates profoundly deaf children at its residential school in Berkshire, and we pride ourselves on our pupils' achievements at GCSE, A Level as well as B Tech and Vocational Courses. We offer the opportunity to teach highly motivated children, in small classes, where you can make a real difference at this national centre of excellence for deaf education. No knowledge of sign language is required, as we follow an auditory/oral philosophy.

The school offers a holistic approach to care, and this involves carrying schoolwork into out-of-school life.  This involves communication with all professionals that work within both the senior and primary schools.  These can be teachers, classroom assistants, audiologists, nurses, speech therapists and specialists from cochlear implant teams, social workers etc. but most importantly care staff will have a good communication link with parents, especially those of their key children.

The Role:

We are seeking energetic, dynamic and enthusiastic people who can commit to being available to work shifts within our residential boarding houses. Our children and young people enjoy being supported by a team of adults who bring with them unique hobbies and interests and an enabling approach which encourages and supports then while away from their homes. You will form relationships with both staff and children and will become an integral part of the residential service as a whole.

Are you someone who is fun to be around, who can role model, who can use their initiative to inspire and motivate? Are you someone who understands that it is s privilege to work with children and who is ready to create wonderful memories that they will take with them into their futures? If so then we would like to hear from you.

As a Bank worker you will receive the same training and development opportunities as all residential staff and the same benefits as listed. You will develop a professional understanding of the team around every child and be part of this in ensuring the best possible outcomes for them.

Ideally you can predict your availability in advance of each half term in order that you and the children have predictability.

Residential staff undertake shifts during term times, sleep in duties and weekend work. Extra payment is made for sleeping-in duties and overtime.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To be a stable and safe adult and a role model of excellent behaviour
  • To work within a structured routine and provide predictability to the children and young people.
  • To lead and participate in activities after school, in the evening and at weekends, promoting social communication and interaction on the school site and in the community.
  • Have an open, fun and mature approach to life
  • To provide care and support for pupils with assistance and mobility, communication and social interaction
  • To liaise, in conjunction with the staff team, with the school SENDCO, Learning Support Assistants, Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist to identify and support the writing of personal care plans and procedures.
  • To oversee the physical and emotional care of the pupils, including but not limited to, consideration of pupil's health, diet, clothing, hygiene, safety, and emotional welfare.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • English and Maths GCSE or equivalent Level 2 qualification
  • Diploma Level 3 in Childcare or willingness to work towards it
  • Ability to communicate well with young people and their parents/carers
  • Understands the importance of Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Data Protection

Desirable:

  • Experience of working within a residential care environment
  • Understands the importance of Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Data Protection

Benefits:

As well as an inclusive and supportive work environment, and a stunning location, benefits also include: school holidays/term time only working, free meals whilst at work, free on-site parking, generous pension scheme and 24/7 Employee Assistance Program.
