Sheffield, Sheffield, United Kingdom Herd Consulting Full time £42,000 - £52,000 per year

Who is this great for?

Our Consultant Business Analysts have been there and got hard-won experience. They're able to apply their know-how and experience to provide tailored, pragmatic, high-impact analysis that is inspired by best practice but not constrained by it. You'll be a people person who is motivated by building long-lasting relationships and wanting to make things better for our clients and their teams and customers.

As a Consultant Business Analyst You'll Be

  • A passionate business analyst who has experience in more than just process modelling and requirements engineering; you can draw upon your know-how to get stuff done for our clients in a pragmatic and impactful way.
  • Experienced in business analysis in different contexts from small improvement initiatives, through to user-centred product-led delivery, and 'big-system' transformation.
  • A relationship builder who is able to create and foster long term relationships with clients in order to build Herd's brand as a trusted partner whilst embracing 'non-consultancy vibes'.
  • Obsessed with outcomes: delivering what's needed for the client, when it's needed.
  • A team player who works with colleagues embracing the 'Power of Herd' to share your knowledge and expertise and enhance the overall experience our clients get from working with us.
  • Committed to life-long learning, you'll be self-motivated to seek out ways to improve your knowledge, toolkit, and refine your craft.
  • Commercially aware and understand how to deliver value for money for our clients, in line with our company values.
  • An all-rounder who is willing to take on a challenge and can adapt to any industry, sector, working approach and remains motivated to drive successful outcomes.
  • A net gain to the team, contributing to a positive working environment that is inclusive for all Herd folk and our clients, helping keep Herd a great place to work.
  • Able to tell a compelling story with the work you deliver in order to influence stakeholders on the best way forward.
  • Able to adjust your approach and delivery accordingly depending on the customer and the situation.

Key elements of the role

  • We expect our Consultant Business Analysts to own defined business analysis delivery within projects, products, or programmes.
  • You'll take ownership of your work, manage stakeholder relationships, and escalate issues that fall outside your ability and remit, proposing practical options or solutions for resolution.
  • You'll largely play a billable consulting role, either independently supporting blended client teams (in-house and potentially other third parties), or as part of a wider Herd team engagement.
  • You'll work on small and medium projects and support larger projects, working closely with customers throughout all stages, managing your own work, building relationships, supporting collaboration, and seeking consensus on decisions.
  • You may join engagements early-on e.g. at an exploration or discovery stage, or later within the delivery lifecycle.
  • You'll be encouraged to engage in wider professional communities, as well as share your experiences internally with other Herd folk and externally through blogs, podcasts, and speaking at events.
  • You may be required to write or contribute to case studies, articles, etc. to promote our capabilities and services.
  • From time to time, you'll be asked to contribute to and support sales activities for bids, tenders, pre-sales work, as well as support the production of Statements of Work.
  • We're a small but growing scale-up, so we're looking for folk who'll embrace that and get stuck in where needed.

Core skills and characteristics

  • You'll enjoy 'getting things done' and finding ways to drive tangible outcomes
  • You'll work collaboratively with people at all levels and across functions and cultures, building rapport along the way and can influence where needed.
  • You'll be able to synthesise complex messages and communicate in a simple but effective manner.
  • You're accountable and own your deliverables, contributing to key outcomes.
  • You'll possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high attention to detail - words and numbers.
  • You'll be a self-starter that can identify and prioritise opportunities to focus on.
  • You can be persuasive when needed to encourage the team to get specific tasks completed.
  • You'll have excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • You'll have the willingness and ability to learn new concepts and tools quickly.
  • You'll have a confident character and approach to things.
  • You're comfortable with and able to work at pace.
  • You'll be able to present your opinions clearly, defend your approach under pressure, and remain open to changing your mind when a better idea is presented.
  • You'll be able to assess each piece of work independently and come up with the best approach to satisfy what's required to a high standard.
  • You'll endeavour to deliver your work in a visually appealing way wherever possible to attract people to want to engage with it and to stand out from the ordinary.
  • You'll be comfortable in challenging customers and internal colleagues on how things are being done when you think there might be a better way, in a confident and considerate manner to ensure it's received as was intended.

Desirable experience

  • We do most of our work in Central Government, Local Authorities, Higher Education, and Charities, therefore experience in any of these sectors would be a plus
  • First-hand experience of working to the GOV.UK Service Standard would be another plus.
  • Any experience in data analysis using tools like Power BI, SQL, or Python.

Right to work

You must have the right to work in the UK. Applicants without this will not be progressed. Herd Consulting does not currently offer sponsorship.

Security clearance

If you have any reason to believe that you may not pass such vetting, you must declare this as soon as possible, and this must be before any job offer is accepted.

How to apply

Please send us your CV/profile, along with a short statement (500 words or less) on why you'd like to work for Herd and showcasing your suitability. Also tell us in 50 words or less, what you think working for a start-up is like. We'll then invite a small number of those who are most suitable to interview.
