Founding Engineer (Legal AI / Evidence Intelligence) @ Pivot

Move beyond chat. Build Evidence Intelligence.

Learn more:

About Pivot:

The legal system has plenty of evidence but little
structured insight
. While most tools focus on "AI chat" and simple retrieval, Pivot is building a new category:
Evidence Intelligence
 - an AI-native intelligent operating system for law, where evidence connects, reasoning is transparent, and justice is more accessible.

We're starting in
Family Law
where fragmented messages, PDFs, statements, emails, photos, and reports are currently slow and expensive to organise and use effectively.

Pivot's core idea:

From documents to relationships - the graph is the case.

We're building a three-layer product:

  • Agent (access)
     – task-focused legal workflows, not generic chat.
  • LLM (intelligence)
     – model-agnostic reasoning with deterministic orchestration.
  • Evidence Graph (knowledge)
     – structured, multimodal evidence with provenance, gating, audit trails, and human review.

We're now looking for a
Founding Engineer
to own this stack end-to-end and help define both the category and the product.

The role:

As Founding Engineer, you will be the technical counterpart to the founder and help turn early demand into a robust product. This is a hands-on role with significant ownership.

You will:

  • Design and build the
    Evidence Graph
     - ingesting unstructured, multimodal evidence (documents, email, chat logs, images) and modelling relationships between entities, timelines, and issues.
  • Implement
    deterministic agent flows
     – DAG-style workflows that orchestrate LLMs, tools, and graph queries with explicit gates, audit logs, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
  • Ship the first production-ready
    "Evidence Layer" starter
that firms can deploy, validate value on real matters, and pay for.
  • Work directly with early
    Family Law partners
to co-design workflows: bundling, chronology building, disclosure review, and case preparation.
  • Set up the
    foundational infrastructure
     – repos, environments, CI/CD, observability, security, data governance.
  • Shape the
    technical culture
     - coding standards, architecture decisions, hiring bar, and how we balance speed vs. safety in a legal context.
  • Help pitch investors and customers by making the technical vision legible: you're comfortable jumping into meetings and whiteboarding the system.

What you might work on in the first 6-12 months:

  • Build an ingestion pipeline that can take a messy folder of PDFs, emails, and message exports and turn it into a
    navigable evidence graph
with entities, events, issues, and citations.
  • Prototype and productionise
    LLM + retrieval + graph
     flows that are:
  • fully cited,
  • reproducible, and
  • auditable (what was run, when, on which data, using which model).
  • Implement
    matter-level access controls
, redaction workflows, and guardrails aligned with court expectations.
  • Design the first set of
    north-star metrics
into the product: time-to-bundle reduction, paralegal-hour savings, citation coverage, and redaction escape rate.
  • Collaborate on a client portal for B2B2C: giving clients visibility into their evidence and case progress without overwhelming them. You will be a great fit if you:

You will be a great fit if you:

  • Have
    5+ years
     building production software, ideally in
    legal tech
     or early-stage startups.
  • Have shipped
    LLM-powered products
used by real users (e.g. RAG, tool-calling, agent-style workflows).
  • Are comfortable across the stack: backend (TypeScript/Node or Python), data (Postgres), basic graph modelling, and cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure) with solid security practices.
  • Care about
    correctness and auditability
     - tests, logs, metrics, and reproducible pipelines are non-negotiable for you.
  • Can turn ambiguous
    legal workflows
into clear flows, APIs, and interfaces.
  • Enjoy working directly with
    lawyers, paralegals, and ops
     and iterating quickly.
  • Want a
    0→1, high-ownership
     founding role.

Bonus:
experience in legal tech, e-discovery, evidence management, litigation tools, knowledge graphs, or information retrieval.

What we offer:

  • Founding-level equity
     - meaningful ownership in the company and category you're helping to create.
  • Competitive salary relative to stage (happy to share rough ranges early in the process).
  • A chance to
    define a new category
(Evidence Intelligence) and see your architectural decisions turn into the reference standard.
  • Direct partnership with the CEO and CTO, early customer access, and visibility with investors.
  • Remote-friendly, with overlap in UK/Europe time zones.
