The opportunity has arisen to join an industry leader in UK's & Ireland's Building Services sector. Alternative Heat design, develop and deliver a wide range of offsite-prefabricated, innovative, and sustainable building service solutions throughout the UK & Europe.

What We Do
We specialise in the design, supply, and installation of a wide range of prefabricated energy solutions, typically built in NI and shipped throughout the UK & Europe. We also offer turnkey design, build, and operate solutions for commercial energy centres and large-scale district heating solutions and have experience with successfully procuring and delivering many similar packages to a wide range of public bodies throughout UK & Europe.

Team Overview
The Design department is responsible for developing innovative, practical, and fully coordinated mechanical and electrical building services solutions tailored to each project. Working closely with clients, project teams, and the BIM department, the design team transforms concepts into detailed, build-ready technical designs that meet regulatory standards, client specifications, and sustainability goals. Their work underpins the technical accuracy and efficiency of our installations, ensuring seamless integration from planning through to construction.

Role Overview: As a Mechanical Engineer, you'll play a vital role in delivering sustainable energy solutions that support the UK and Europe's transition to low-carbon infrastructure. You'll contribute to high-profile projects across healthcare, education, leisure, and high-rise residential sectors, helping shape greener communities through innovative design. Your responsibilities will include mechanical sizing, equipment selection, and detailed calculations, as well as conducting site surveys to ensure technical accuracy. You'll analyse energy performance data to inform design decisions and optimise system efficiency in line with decarbonisation goals. Working closely with our fabrication team, you'll ensure products are built to specification, and collaborate with an experienced design team using the latest AutoCAD and MEP 3D software to deliver build-ready solutions.

What You'll be Doing

Prepare relevant mechanical design drawings, calculations, plant selections, BOM, and specifications.

Develop project specific BMS control strategies for implementation and follow through to verification onsite.

Understanding and ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety regulations and quality standards

Attendance at project design meetings when required.

Ability to work in conjunction with contracts managers and commissioning teams to assist in the commissioning process including proofing and streamlining of BMS controls operation.

Liaising professionally with clients, suppliers, contractors and other relevant authorities as necessary at an extremely professional level.

Travel to company sites in Scotland, England and Wales may be required occasionally.

What You Need to Have

Educated to HNC/HND Level in Mechanical Engineering / Building services or an equivalent relevant qualification.

Minimum Of 3 Years' Design Experience Within Building Services.
Experience in using Mechanical Design Software.

Knowledge of legislation, standards, safe working practices and environmental best practices would be desirable.

Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

Excellent organisation, planning and attention to detail.

Ability to work under pressure on one's own initiatives to achieve self and team target.

What You Would Ideally Have
Minimum of one year's relevant experience in Design in a Commercial M&E Sector.

Experience in using AutoCAD, MEP or Revit packages.
