The Peterborough School (TPS) is an Independent Day School delivering exceptional education and nurturing children from Nursery through to Sixth Form. We are now seeking to recruit a highly effective, qualified Learning Support Assistant to join our successful team. The appointed person will deliver high quality SEND support for learning, both in and out of the classroom. They will work with a team of staff to provide excellent support to SEND students across both the Preparatory and Senior School. The Learning Support Assistant will provide in class support at the direction of the class teacher and Head of Individual Learning and also prepare, deliver and assess the impact of specific interventions.

Job Description

Pupil Learning and Curriculum Content

Assisting class teachers' in the implementation of set tasks for pupils.

Helping to raise standards of achievement of specific pupils.

Preparing, delivering and assessing the impact of specific interventions.

Recording observations of children to inform:

  • class teacher's planning
  • assessment of progress
  • implemented or required SEND support
  • children's annual review of EHCP

Providing feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under guidance of the teacher.

Where necessary, accompanying children and teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities.

Learning and Supporting Strategies

Helping to implement lesson plans and encouraging children to stay on task.

Supporting children using SEND based strategies when required.

Motivating pupils to achieve their potential.

Encouraging children to communicate positively.

Helping children to understand instructions.

Ensuring pupils feel comfortable and confident in their own abilities.

Supporting pupils on an individual basis to access the subject matter provided by the class teacher.

Assisting in the development of varying skills that supports the pupil's learning skills.

Assisting in the production of teaching and learning aids.

When necessary, supporting the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate.

To provide individual support, as required, during tests and examination sessions.

The Classroom Environment

Assisting in providing an atmosphere in which effective learning can take place.

Modelling good practice.

Working Relationships

Developing positive relationships with the pupils to assist pupil progress and attainment and maintain good discipline.

Helping to ensure the inclusion of all children.

Providing feedback to Head of Individual Learning and class teachers on pupils.

Personal and Social Care

Assisting in the personal and social care of pupils and in the development of related skills.

Supporting teaching staff in providing for the safe supervision of pupils inside and outside the classroom.

Assisting in the general welfare of pupils.

Key Accountabilities

Delivering high quality SEND support for academic learning and pastoral care of children.

Supervising pupils as appropriate and assisting with other school and curricular activities as directed (at a level that is consistent with the status and grading of the post).

Looking after the personal health and safety of the pupils by administering first aid (at a level which is appropriate to the post holder's knowledge and ability) and assisting as necessary in accordance with the school's policies and practices.

Administrative Duties

Providing written feedback on the progress of children and impact of interventions.

To take part in training activities offered by the school to further knowledge and skills of working with children with specific learning difficulties.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • English and Mathematics GCSE grade C or above
  • Appropriate (Minimum Level 2 or 3) SEND qualifications and/or training for Teaching Assistants

Desirable

  • Level 4 qualifications relevant to the role
  • First Aid qualifications

Experience

Desirable

  • Experience of working within a classroom environment and supporting a classroom teacher.
  • Experience of working with a child with specific learning needs

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Ability to promote positive behaviour
  • Observation skills
  • Knowledge of how to make learning accessible for a child with ASD
  • Has excellent communication and oral and written presentational skills
  • Good ICT skills
  • An ability to generate self confidence in pupils
  • Ability to use other equipment e.g. photocopier
