THE TEAM

JSM is a high-growth, private equity-backed utilities service provider, delivering integrated power and communications infrastructure across the UK. As part of our growth journey, we're expanding our finance team and seeking a commercially minded Finance Business Partner to bring insights, rigour, and process improvements to project and operational reporting.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role will support both operational and strategic financial planning, with a strong emphasis on commercial accounting, project forecasting, and business process optimisation.

SCOPE OF ROLE

As Finance Business Partner, you'll work cross-functionally with Commercial, Operations, and wider Finance teams to provide real-time financial analysis, manage project performance, support cashflow optimisation, and oversee accurate month-end reporting. You'll also take the lead on business improvement initiatives and assist with any M&A activity.

HOW YOU'LL SUCCEED

Project & Commercial Accounting

  • Interrogate project trading positions using end-of-life value and cost forecasting
  • Partner with the Commercial Director to review the pipeline and order book rollout
  • Analyse variances between the business plan and actuals; highlight key movements
  • Support cash collection: ensure invoices are issued, cash forecasts updated, overdue debts chased
  • Track high-value materials (HVM) cash in/out flows and client payments
  • Implement client/supplier credit checks and risk mitigation procedures
  • Reconcile Contract WIP, overmeasures, and accruals with minimal aged items

Financial Reporting & Controls

  • Produce monthly management accounts and board packs
  • Generate weekly and long-term cashflow forecasts; track actual vs forecast
  • Ensure job ledger and CVR reconcile with the general ledger
  • Maintain accurate, reconcilable balance sheets without manual adjustments
  • Monitor stock movement and reporting
  • Oversee payroll, subcontractor payments, and timesheet integration
  • Own monthly balance sheet reconciliations and action closure
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve financial processes and controls

WHAT IT TAKES

  • ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualified
  • Experience in construction, utilities or a similar project-based industry
  • Strong commercial acumen and understanding of CVRs, order books, and project forecasting
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data reconciliation)
  • High attention to detail and ability to simplify financial reporting for stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Proactive mindset – able to identify improvements, drive change, and bring people on the journey

  • Participation in mentoring and coaching programmes
