The Academy of Medical Sciences
– an independent, expert voice of biomedical and health research in the UK – is looking for a
Policy Director
to join a collaborative, high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading and inspiring a high-performing domestic and international policy team of approximately 18.
- Leading bold, evidence-informed initiatives that shape decisions across government and health systems.
- Championing innovation, from AI and data-driven tools to new care pathways, and making sure breakthroughs deliver real benefits for patients.
- Building trusted relationships with Ministers, senior officials, industry leaders and global partners.
- Playing a key role in the senior leadership team.
- Serving as a trusted, non-partisan convenor of experts.
- Leading horizon-scanning and foresight – advancing the UK's position as a global leader in medical research and life sciences innovation and growth while upholding the Academy's independence.
- Mobilising relationships with peer national academies and foundations across the globe to ensure the voice of medical sciences is strong.
- Working closely with senior leaders across government, industry, academia and the NHS in the UK and internationally.
Skills and Experience
- Confident, empowering and inclusive leader with experience building and setting direction for high-performing teams in changing environments.
- Senior-level experience in health, biomedical research, or science policy.
- Ability to translate complex evidence into clear, actionable policy.
- Track record of getting traction on policy across governments and health systems in the UK and internationally.
- Collaborative team player with experience working in partnership with (at least some of) government, industry, universities, and NHS leadership to drive real-world impact.
- Excellent communicator and influencer.
- Proven track record of engaging and diverse audiences, including policymakers, researchers, clinicians, and the public.
- Able to shape policy that secures long-term support.
- Experience in securing external funding or income through commissioned work, partnerships, or grants, or an appetite for developing skills in this area.

From £115,000.

Permanent, full-time.
