Service Description

Dormeads House is a nurturing and child-centred residential children's home situated on the outskirts of Weston-Super-Mare. The home provides high-quality, therapeutic care and support for children and young people with complex emotional and behavioural needs, helping them feel safe, valued, and supported. Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, consistent care to children and young people within the home, supporting them to feel safe, achieve their goals, and develop independence. To work as part of a team in delivering therapeutic, child-centred care in line with policies, regulations, and individual care plans.

General Duties

  • Deliver day-to-day care and support to children and young people, ensuring their physical, emotional, and social needs are met.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships and act as a positive role model.
  • Uphold safeguarding responsibilities, reporting concerns immediately.
  • Participate in key working, completing records and contributing to care planning.
  • Engage young people in education, recreation, and life skills.
  • Support young people with emotional regulation using PACE and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Complete all required recording accurately and promptly (daily logs, incidents, MAR charts, handovers).

Specific Duties

  • Provide practical support (meals, transport, health appointments, activities).
  • Support young people to manage emotions and behaviours, using de-escalation and positive behaviour strategies.
  • Participate in shift handovers and ensure communication is accurate.
  • Carry out domestic duties (cleaning, tidying, laundry) to maintain a safe and homely environment.
  • Ensure health & safety practices are followed.
  • Contribute to team meetings, training, and development.
  • Support the Senior Support Worker and Managers in delivering high standards of care.

Qualifications

  • NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Residential Childcare (or willingness to work towards).

Experience

  • Experience of working with children/young people (residential, fostering, education, youth work).

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Knowledge of safeguarding, behaviour management, and childcare practice.
  • Empathetic, resilient, and committed to improving children's outcomes.

Skills and Abilities

  • Resilient, reflective, and committed to providing high standards of care.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
