The Trust is seeking to appoint a substantive part-time (0.4 WTE) Consultant Neurologist to join the team at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) . This role will support the delivery of high-quality, timely neurological care for local patients and contribute to the continued development of the service within the Lewisham Medicine and Community Division.

The post holder will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team providing both inpatient and outpatient neurology services. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and strengthen local neurology provision, working closely with colleagues at regional neuroscience centres to improve access, continuity, and outcomes for patients with neurological conditions.

Applicants must be included on the GMC Specialist Register for Neurology or be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the date of interview.

Please note JD is pending Approval by the Royal College.

Provide a comprehensive, high-quality inpatient and outpatient neurology service at University Hospital Lewisham.

Deliver specialist advice and input for the management of patients admitted with neurological conditions, including ward reviews and multidisciplinary discussions.

Undertake regular outpatient neurology clinics , ensuring timely assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients referred from primary and secondary care.

Participate in the development and implementation of clinical pathways to enhance local access to neurology expertise.

Work collaboratively with the wider neurology team, including consultant colleagues, specialist nurses, and allied health professionals, to deliver safe and effective patient care.

Contribute to the clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities of the department.

Support the education and training of medical students, junior doctors, and other healthcare staff.

Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) and maintain GMC revalidation requirements.

Clinical Responsibilities

  1. A part-time post-holder will be expected to undertake 2 neurology clinics each week (4 hours each), and to see predominantly new patients with some follow-up capacity built in. We would encourage colleagues to develop specialty clinics, provided that they are of clinical relevance to the service and local needs.

  2. There is a commitment to adequate levels of secretarial cover on each site. Consultants are provided with sufficient office space and IT support.

  3. We provide five-day ward consultation services on both sites. Consultants participate in a rota to see ward referrals at UHL and QEH hospitals. We endeavour to see all referrals within 24 hours of referral. The workload varies but a reasonable expectation would be to see an average of 4-6 ward patients per session.

  4. There is currently no on-call commitment.

Medical Education & Teaching

Candidates are expected to contribute to departmental educational meetings and clinical supervision of doctors in training. There is a commitment to teaching of neurology to GSTT undergraduates in both formal tutorial sessions as well as in clinic/onward rounds, foundation doctors, Core Medical Trainees and GP Registrars in turn with other colleagues in the department

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

Undertake or supervise clinical audit and comply with Clinical Governance requirements

Continuing Professional Development

  1. Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level.

  2. Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice:

a. Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy, in line with the Trust's commitment to supporting revalidation.

b. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.

  1. The Trust is committed to providing mentoring to newly appointed consultants.

Policy, Planning and Management

  • Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines.
  • Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service.
  • Comply with all Trust policies.
