About the job.

National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Drainage Engineer to join our Operations directorate in the North West region. The Senior Engineer will lead and coordinate the activities and resources involved in the identification of asset needs and development of early solutions for the asset class in scope, while assuring adherence to defined asset policies and standards. You will be leading on drainage renewal schemes/projects.

The role may be required on occasions to work unsociable hours and will be based in Warrington, Penrith or Preston with a balance of remote and office-based work.

Please note that you will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have no more than 3 points to be considered for this position and during employment.

  • Lead the development of early solutions for drainage renewals and improvements, including the compiling and checking of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, taking into account new techniques, materials, buildability, and costs.
  • Assist the Drainage Engineering Team Manager with the delivery of agreed early solutions and plans, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
  • Identifying, prepare briefs and support delivery of survey works that support the improvement and/or renewal of assets.
  • Provide technical support to the Drainage Engineering Team Manager by managing the flood risk to the network .
  • Undertake technical reviews of third party designs to ensure that they comply with standards, design briefs and Design for Maintenance Requirements.

About you.

  • Degree or HND in relevant discipline and appropriate experience, or equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience of promoting drainage renewals (or similar) schemes/projects with the ability to work within budgets including creation of a budget for scheme development.
  • Knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and their application on the highways network with experience in highway infrastructure/drainage design and good knowledge of CDM 2015
  • Experience of working closely with other internal/external design teams, Contractors, Local Authorities, Stakeholders etc.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer and member of a relevant professional Body with appropriate experience

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
