R&D Engineer

Barocal, a spin-out from the University of Cambridge, is the global technology leader in field of solid-state cooling and heating. Our breakthrough engineering and materials technologies deliver significantly higher efficiencies than conventional refrigeration and heat pump systems, whilst completely eliminating the use of harmful refrigerant gases. Supported by leading climate funders like Breakthrough Energy, Kiko Ventures and the European Innovation Council (EIC), Barocal's technology is poised to transform and modernise industries which today account for over 40% of global energy use.
Tasks- System Design: Design and develop components, subsystems and systems which enhance the functionality and efficiency of Barocal's innovative cooling solutions.
- Experimental Design and Execution: Design and carry out experiments to validate the performance of advanced prototypes in lab and real-world conditions.
- CAD Drawing: Utilise CAD software to create detailed engineering drawings, ensuring precision in design and adherence to industry standards.
- Manufacturing Engineering: Drive projects that enhance product efficiency, functionality, cost-effectiveness and manufacturability.
- Customer & Supplier Engagement: Collaborate with customers and suppliers to ensure customer requirements and specifications are met or exceeded, and that Barocal's quality, performance and delivery requirements are adhered to by suppliers.
- Project Management: Manage own projects and sub-projects and potentially the work of others as part of a team, to ensure Barocal's overall objectives are met and that projects stay on track.
- Education: 2.1 or 1st Class Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Thermal Engineering, or a related discipline. A PhD in a related field is a plus.
- Experience: 3+ years of achievement in an industrial or R&D environment.
- Practical Skills: Demonstrable capability and aptitude in practical engineering tasks and engineering problem solving including building and operating lab or industrial equipment..
