THE POST– Research Assistant

The University of West of Scotland is recruiting for a Research Assistant to join the division of Physical Sciences within the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences on a 6 month fixed term basis.

The postholder will contribute to the new UKRI STFC funded project in gravitational wave detection (GWD) research. Specifically, the project will provide measurement and analysis of plasma`s relevant to assisted deposition of optical coatings for use in GWD. The universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde and West of Scotland are working collaboratively to develop optical coating technology for use in next generation GWD, primarily based on plasma assisted ion beam sputtering.

The successful candidate should have the following:

  • First Degree in Physics, or in an appropriate related discipline.

  • PhD close to completion in Gravitational Wave Detection research.

  • A track record in research, demonstrating strong analytical experience applied to gravitational wave detection, and clear long-term plan for development of research activity relevant to needs of the School.

  • A demonstrable history of high-quality research of gravitational wave detection commensurate with career stage.

  • Evidence of experience in laboratory practise relevant to gravitational wave detection research

Applicants should be aware that this role is fully funded externally so is offered as fixed term for 6 months. Any further extension would be considered on the renewal of that external funding.
