London, Greater London, United Kingdom Ben Full time £60,000 - £120,000 per year

Our Mission
We're not your average benefits platform; we're the unordinary force that uplifts people's lives. Our technology is the link that connects the entire benefits ecosystem, creating better outcomes for employers, employees, brokers, and providers.

Our mission is clear: we're here to create a world where everything operates at its very best, ensuring that every employee receives the support they need to live life to the fullest, both at work and beyond.

Your Mission
As a backend leaning
Fullstack Engineer
at Ben, you'll help build and scale the features that power our platform from benefits browsing and payments to provider integrations and smart admin tooling.

You'll take features from idea to production: understanding the problem, scoping solutions, building, shipping, and making sure what you deliver truly solves the need. You won't just be handed tickets, you'll contribute to shaping
why
we build things,
how
we build them, and
what
the future of our product looks like.

You'll collaborate across product, design, and engineering to make decisions that matter: data models, integration patterns, API design, scalability choices, and how we support a system used by hundreds of thousands of people. At Ben, everything is connected so what you build helps power payroll workflows, provider integrations, notifications, and everything in between.

And you'll do all this as part of a fun, fast-moving startup, spending
2 days a week with the team in our Barbican office
.

Things you will be working on…

  • Build and ship backend-leaning fullstack features across the product (APIs, services, integrations, and some frontend too)
  • Work closely with product managers to understand context and shape solutions early
  • Collaborate with designers to create polished, intuitive experiences
  • Contribute to technical discovery, architecture thinking, and implementation planning
  • Ask product and UX questions when something doesn't quite add up
  • Design with scale, reliability, and enterprise readiness in mind (security, compliance, flexibility)
  • Own your work from idea to production and care about the impact once it's live
  • Help improve developer experience, tooling, and internal standards
  • Ensure security best practices (OWASP, AWS Well-Architected, etc.) are embedded in how we ship software

You will thrive in this role if you…

  • Have strong experience building modern web apps, especially backend systems
  • Are comfortable in Python and TypeScript (or excited to learn quickly)
  • Care about solving real user problems, not just closing tasks
  • Enjoy collaborating directly with PMs and designers without needing perfect specs
  • Like figuring out the how with autonomy and the why with curiosity
  • Know what it means to build for enterprise scale
  • Are pragmatic able to balance scrappy shipping with thoughtful engineering
  • Communicate clearly and enjoy working with friendly, ambitious people

Nice-to-haves, but not deal-breakers:

  • Experience with financial platforms, HR tech, or B2B SaaS
  • Experience building reliable workflows with tools like Temporal

You will
not
love this role if you…

  • Prefer a slow or highly predictable pace we move quickly and value action
  • Feel uncomfortable owning projects end-to-end and being accountable for outcomes
  • Prefer maintaining the status quo we challenge assumptions and improve constantly
  • Want a heavily structured environment we're still building processes as we grow
  • Struggle with ambiguity or prefer prescriptive direction you'll get context, but you'll need to figure things out
  • Wait for others to take initiative this is a proactive, high-performance team

Not sure if you meet 100% of the requirements?
That's okay, careers aren't linear. If you have a strong technical foundation, solid backend experience, and enthusiasm for fullstack engineering in a fast-moving startup, we'd love to hear from you. Just make sure you feel confident contributing meaningfully from day one.
