Senior .NET Software Engineer

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Astute Search Full time £60,000 - £120,000 per year

About the Role

Astute Search has partnered with a global specialty finance firm on a multi-year initiative to modernize their operations and technology infrastructure. They're expanding their UK presence and need senior software developers in their London office who can work directly with actuaries and underwriters while solving complex technical problems.

This is more than a coding position. You'll be maintaining what's running while building what's next; transitioning legacy .NET systems to Azure microservices while collaborating face-to-face with the business users who depend on these systems.

Why This Role Matters

The company is established, profitable, and committed to this transformation. They need engineers in London who can bridge the gap between technical excellence and business outcomes. You'll have direct access to the CTO and senior technical leadership across the US and UK, working with an experienced team (no graduates to mentor) on problems that directly affect how the firm delivers reinsurance services globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development of robust, scalable solutions using .NET Core, C#, and Azure
  • Migrate legacy .NET applications to Azure-based microservices architecture using event-driven design patterns
  • Implement CQRS and event sourcing patterns to support business-critical workflows
  • Apply domain-driven design principles when collaborating with London-based actuaries and underwriters
  • Design solutions that have a clear line to business outcomes
  • Balance keeping legacy systems stable whilst modernizing the stack
  • Promote best practices and collaborate with cross-functional teams across Europe

Technical Expectations

  • Strong .NET Core, C#, SQL experience
  • Proven experience with event-driven architecture, CQRS, and event sourcing patterns
  • Practical application of domain-driven design (DDD) principles
  • Cosmos DB knowledge
  • Azure microservices architecture and asynchronous development patterns
  • Preferred: React, TypeScript, Snowflake, Service Bus, WPF, OAuth
  • Understanding of telemetry data analysis

What Sets This Role Apart

  • Direct Business Impact: Daily interaction with actuaries and underwriters who use what you build
  • Leadership Access: Direct partnership with CTO and senior leadership on technical strategy
  • Actual Architectural Decisions: Not just ticket work; you'll influence how systems evolve using modern patterns like event sourcing and CQRS
  • Balance of Innovation & Pragmatism: Modernize where it matters while maintaining critical legacy applications
  • Stable Company, Genuine Challenges: Established firm with complex technical problems worth solving

The Fit

If you prefer pure heads-down coding with zero business interaction, this isn't it. But if you're curious about the commercial side of reinsurance whilst solving complex technical problems in a London office environment, this could work well.

This is the ideal role for senior software engineers who thrive in collaborative, business-first environments and want to see how their technical choices affect real business outcomes.
