Caretaker – Fairfield Community Hall

Location: Fairfield Community Hall, Fairfield Park, SG5 4GY

Hours: Part-time, 15 hours per week with the opportunity for occasional overtime

Contract: Permanent (subject to successful probation)

Role Overview

The Caretaker will ensure the Community Hall is clean, safe, secure, and ready for use. This includes opening and locking-up, routine and special cleaning, basic maintenance, supporting hall bookings, and liaising with contractors.

Core hours are Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 10:00. Some flexibility is required for occasional callouts, evening work, or weekend event work (paid or taken as time off in lieu).

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

1. Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Carry out all cleaning tasks to a high standard, as per the cleaning schedule. This includes cleaning male, female and accessible toilets, kitchen, halls, meeting room, office, storage areas, corridors, and other areas of the Community Hall as required (this is majority of the role).
  • Report maintenance issues or defects promptly.
  • Replace light bulbs and strip lights, and carry out minor repair work.
  • Carry out basic painting, tiling and patch repair tasks.
  • Be on site when external contractors attend (e.g., electricians, plumbers, etc).
  • Order / purchase low value janitorial and maintenance supplies.
  • Heavy lifting and working at stepladder height is required (within safe working limits).

2. Setting up for Hall Users

  • Set up halls and rooms for bookings, including setting out tables, chairs, and other equipment correctly for each user.
  • Keep the building tidy and ensure furniture and equipment are returned and stored correctly after use.

3. Building Operations

  • Adjust heating and other building systems as required, maintaining comfort while minimising energy use.
  • Ensure all fire exits remain clear and operational.
  • Record utility meter readings monthly, and pass to the Trustees.
  • Complete monthly inspection checks and highlight any required actions.

4. Security

  • Maintain custody of building keys.
  • When locking up, check all windows, doors, and fire exits, and follow the full lock-up procedure.

5. Compliance

  • Follow fire safety regulations, Health & Safety requirements, COSHH procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Be familiar with the Community Hall Health & Safety Policy, Risk Assessments, Fire Risk Assessment, and Emergency Plan.
  • Plan all periodic regulatory, safety and maintenance inspections and seek quotations form suitably qualified contractors to carry out those maintenance inspections. Arrange for any necessary remedial work to be carried out. All expenditure must be approved by the Trustees in advance of work taking place.

6. General Duties

  • Assist the Hall Manager as required in the smooth running of the Community Hall.
  • Cover the Hall Manager's role in periods of absence (sickness, vacation, etc).
  • Some computer work will be required, such as handling e-mails, ordering supplies, etc.
  • Occasional overtime, evening and weekend work.
  • Carry out all other duties as may be reasonably required by the Trustees and the Hall Manager in relation to cleaning, maintaining and operating the Community Hall.

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: £12.50-£15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 15 per week
