About The Team
Costain are providing technical advisory input to Arup in order to develop the HS2 Phase 2a West Midlands to Crewe and Phase 2b Lot 3 East Midlands to Leeds preliminary design and environmental statements (ES). The works include developing the design to a sufficient level of detail to allow deposit of the hybrid Bill for each contract to parliament and to support the Bill through the parliamentary process in order to obtain Royal Assent.

Royal Assent is to be obtained by end of 2019 for Phase 2a and by late 2022 for Phase 2b.

Although the HS2 Phase 2a scheme travels mainly through open countryside on a series of embankments, viaducts and cuttings, engineering challenges includes a crossing over the M6, two sections of twin bore tunnel and a skewed crossing of the West Coast Mainline (WCML) before turning north to run parallel with the WCML on the approach to Crewe.

Phase 2b will incorporate similar features including embankments, viaducts and cuttings. It also incorporates one station, two depots and a twin bore tunnel.
