Senior Project Financial Controller

Our client is seeking a Senior Tender & Project Controller to partner with Project Management on major capital projects across the UK and Europe. The role supports complex projects in diverse industries such as utilities, renewables, industry, transportation, datacenter's, infrastructure etc.

This is a UK-based hybrid role (typically 1–2 days per week in the office, otherwise remote), acting as the key finance business partner across the full project lifecycle – covering both tender controlling (pre‑award) and project controlling (post‑award) for large, multi‑year EPC and infrastructure projects, typically £100m+ in value.

Key responsibilities:

• Compliance: Supports the Project Leader/s in adherence too: corporate governance, integrity, assurance, internal control, group charter, business specific finance directives and instructions.
• Project execution: Provides input to the Project Execution Plan on financial aspects and update as responsible of Project Cost & Finance Management Plan. Prepares project invoices, financial accounting and reporting (including project site accounting). Drive and seek for optimization of Project Cash Flow, Revenues and GM contribution together with Project Manager. Oversees currency risk, bonds and guarantees and tax issues. Additional tasks: handling of variation orders, preparing of finance input to line reporting, assess petty cash account and payments, follow-up on scope. Is responsible for the correctness of project balance sheet and income statement as well as for cash flow and monthly/quarterly forecast.
• Monitoring and review: Participates in opportunity/risk identification/mitigation, monitor that all required mitigation actions are timely implemented. Joint responsibility with the Project Manager for all Financial aspects of the project including Estimate at completion and related Cost-to-complete, forecasted Revenues and Cash Flow, Risks and Opportunities assessment and ensure alignment with other functions including Project Controls, planning/scheduling. Supports the Project Head in coordinating and preparing monthly project reviews. Participates in preparing the project cost report. Verifies the substance for cost to complete. Create input for customer reports. Prepare and support in audits – external as well as internal audits.
• Commercial terms: Provides support on claim management, back-charges and insurance cases and monitors the proper follow up together with the Contract Manager/Project Manager up-stream (towards customer), side-stream (towards consortia partner) as well as down-stream (towards suppliers).

Ideal profile:

• Of the total experience, minimum 5+ years' experience in a project finance role within an EPC or project‑based environment, either managing multiple large projects (£100m+) or acting as the key controller on a single, very large/complex project (circa £300m+).
• Experience with long‑cycle, capital‑intensive projects (4–5 years), with a strong grasp of how project schedules translate into financial performance and progress (both accounting and operational).
• Degree in finance, accounting or a related field; a professional qualification (ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) is strongly preferred.
• Proven track record in project and/or tender controlling, including cost control, financial analysis, forecasting and performance optimisation.
• Solid understanding of governance, compliance and internal control requirements in a project setting.
• Excellent Excel skills: experience with SAP or similar ERP is an advantage.
• Strong analytical capability, sound judgement and the ability to challenge and influence senior stakeholders.
• Effective communicator and collaborator, comfortable working cross‑functionally in a matrix environment.
• Operates as an individual contributor, reporting to Head of Project Controlling-EU, with significant senior stakeholder exposure.
