The Role:

You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of technology modernisation across the UK Public Sector. You'll lead the development and delivery of the public sector legacy technology strategy, ensuring it gains endorsement and drives meaningful change across government departments and agencies.

In this high-impact role, you'll work with a wide range of stakeholders — from senior government technologists to external vendors — to identify, promote and embed best practices, standards and assurance approaches that support the transformation of legacy systems.

As Lead Technologist, you will:

  • Lead the creation and delivery of the Public Sector Legacy Technology Strategy, securing stakeholder endorsement.
  • Identify and develop existing principles, standards, best practice and assurance approaches, and promote their adoption across government.
  • Engage with vendors to ensure their products and services deliver maximum value to the UK Public Sector.
  • Upskill colleagues across departments through coaching, mentoring, and sharing modernisation practices.
  • Represent your work confidently to senior stakeholders — both technical and non-technical — and influence strategic decisions at the highest levels.
  • I am looking for a technologist with strong strategic leadership and deep technical credibility.

You will have:

  • Proven experience setting and delivering a digital and data vision, particularly focused on service and technology modernisation.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and building technology solutions, enabling you to evaluate proposals and shape execution approaches confidently.
  • A strong track record of supplier and vendor engagement.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage persuasively with senior technical and non-technical audiences, preferably across government.
  • A passion for coaching and mentoring, helping to raise capability across the public sector.
  • A solid understanding of the opportunities and challenges in delivering digital services and technology in government or the wider public sector.
  • You'll be operating at the highest level of your Digital & Data specialism — likely from an Architecture background — with broad experience across Data, IT Operations, or Software Development.
  • Relevant industry certifications are highly desirable.
