About the role
To lead the Technical Team, ensuring high technical standards for all events and shows at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
Lead the Technical Team
- Oversee successful delivery of Technical Production aspects of all events
- Manage team goals and objectives, to ensure high professional and technical standards are met across the team
- Inspire, motivate, and encourage the Technical Team
- Strategic planning with the Head of Technical (Capital Projects) to ensure continued flexibility to deliver the staffing and resources for all events
Management
- Line manage Senior Production Manager, Senior Technicians & Technical Co-Ordinator
- Ensure the right support and technical systems are in place for reporting staff to work to the best of their ability
- Conduct regular 1-2-1 meetings and PDR/Appraisals with reporting team members
- Lead any performance reviews and disciplinary proceedings of reporting team members
Operations
- Provide support to the team as required to ensure the successful delivery of Technical Production aspects of all events
- Develop team goals and objectives, to ensure high professional and technical standards are met across the team
- Work strategically with the Head of Technical (Capital Projects), Senior Technician (Staffing) and Senior Production Manager to ensure continued flexibility to deliver the staffing and resources for all events
- Work directly on events, shows and rehearsals as part of the Technical Production teams as required
Maintenance & Inspections:
- Working with the Head of Technical (Capital Projects), support the planning and implementation of all maintenance & statutory inspections of technical equipment and machinery
Continuous Improvement through Training & Development
- Collaborate with senior team members to analyse technical training needs
- Identify areas for industry relevant personal development through line management processes with senior members of the team,
- Oversee development and implementation of future proofing the tech team, working with local colleges, placements and apprenticeships across the region.
- Oversee implementation of the training matrix with other senior members of the team.
- Identify pinpoint areas for process enhancement, new technology adoption, and team skill development
Safety & Compliance: Co-Lead with the Head of Technical (Capital Projects) on all aspects of Health & Safety processes for the team
- Lead, develop and encourage safe working practices (compliant with Health and Safety regulations) in all aspects of the Technical Team's work
- Oversee compliance with Health & Safety regulations for Technical Production aspects of all events.
- Attend monthly cross-departmental Health & Safety Committee meeting to represent the Technical team
- Attend project and safety meetings if required, to represent all technical operations
- Oversee maintenance of all equipment to high standards, meeting the requirements of all statutory Health & Safety regulations
- Where relevant, ensure appropriate safeguarding is in place for children, young people and adults at risk, working closely with relevant colleagues to maintain consistency and high standards
Policies & Procedures:
- Adhere to and enforce all organisational policies, including but not limited to Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Customer Care, Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity.
- Ensure reporting staff are aware of and adhere to all organisational policies and procedures
Other duties:
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the seniority of the post and in line with the needs of the organisation.
- Act as an on-call Duty Technician, as part of a shared responsibility with other senior members of the team (includes on call payment)
- To work on events as part of the Technical Production teams
- Undertake duties as a Technician, if required (see separate Technician Job Description for duties)
It would be great if you had experience in:
Essential:
- Knowledge of technical operations for live events, gained through either at least three years professional experience working in venues or external sites (with a capacity of at least 400 seats)
- Proven experience of high competence in one or more of the following disciplines: lighting, audio, audio visual, Health & Safety, production management, stage management
- Ability to read and implement technical layout plans
- Developed IT skills and ability to assimilate new technology and software
- In depth knowledge of Health & Safety Legislation and safe working practices including noise at work and working at height
- Experience of safe operation of flying systems, including basic rigging knowledge and experience of operating motor chain hoists, with ability to read rigging plans
- Line management and motivation of multi-disciplined technical staff (permanent and freelance/casuals),
- An organised yet flexible approach and ability to work to tight deadlines whilst remaining calm under pressure
- Demonstrable ability to work as a team and under your own initiative
- Excellent attention to detail
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to talk to people on their own level and to create good relationships within the team and with other departments
- Ability to be creative and resourceful in problem-solving
- Willingness to work flexibly across a 7 day-a-week rota to include evenings, weekend and bank holidays
- This role involves regular manual handling of items of up to 20kg, standing for prolonged periods, and operating machinery that requires manual dexterity. We are committed to supporting applicants with disabilities and will make reasonable adjustments to enable individuals to perform these tasks

- IOSH qualification and/or experience of preparing Risk Assessments and Method Statements (or willingness to undertake within 2 years)
