The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Advisory Teacher who has knowledge and experience with advising on Learning Behaviours and Autism and Social Communication.

You will work as part of the APST, who support mainstream secondary schools with some of their children who are at risk of permanent exclusion.

FTE Salary: Soulbury EIP 4-6 £45,659 to £48,349 per annum

Actual Salary: Pro rata £27,395 to £29,009 per annum

Contract Type: Fixed Term / Secondment until 31 August 2026

Working Pattern: 22.2 hours per week, part time (3 days per week)

Location: Crawley

  • You will need to travel countywide in this role to visit schools, including to locations that are not always accessible by public transport.
  • There is a regular and intrinsic requirement to communicate in English with members of the public.

Join us as an Advisory Teacher in this exciting opportunity where you will be part of the Alternative Provision Specialist Taskforce (APST). The APST is a multi-agency team who offer a team-around the child style of support for children who are at risk of permanent exclusion. You will be working alongside Youth Justice, Family Support, Speech and Language, and Youth Emotional Support.

As an Advisory Teacher, you will collaborate with, influence, and challenge schools and settings to improve services and support a single learning journey for all pupils.

Working alongside practitioners, parents, and children/young people, you will develop the quality of the environment and interactions through assessments, planning, and teaching, to support learning and development, especially for those who may experience difficulties with learning and / or behaviour (including ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, mental health, and Downs Syndrome).

You will use your professional skills to lead inclusive practices, raise standards, and improve pupil progress and access to learning.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Effective implementation of LA and school policies through monitoring, guidance, and training.
  • Providing specialist knowledge and advice to schools, settings, colleagues, and other agencies.
  • Promoting the Inclusion Strategy and Equal Opportunities.
  • Monitoring of information and reports to meet national and local priorities.
  • Planning and delivering high quality continuous professional development programmes.
  • Challenging existing practices and creating innovative solutions.
  • Working closely with leaders, managers, governors, parents, children, young people, practitioners, colleagues, and other agencies/professionals as required.

About You

We are looking for someone who has knowledge and understanding of neurodiversity and who is committed to inclusive practice in all areas of work. We are looking for someone with a good working knowledge and understanding of the role of LBAT and ASCT and experience of their ways of working. You will also need to be flexible and open to new and different ways of working, whilst using your foundational knowledge and experience.

Please note that due to the nature of this role, you will need emotional resilience and strong personal values, with integrity, openness and an awareness of others.

Key Skills:

  • Ability to make sound pragmatic problem-solving decisions and provide comprehensive professional advice.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written) with the ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships to successfully influence, persuade and negotiate effective outcomes.

  • Ability to challenge existing practices and identify innovative solutions to improve learning outcomes for children and young people.

  • Excellent inclusive practice and teaching skills with a good knowledge of SEND and neurodiversity (with potential specialist knowledge in one area).

  • Sound and accurate IT skills to enhance teaching and learning.

Qualifications and/or experience:

  • Educated to degree level with QTS.
  • Experience of supporting pupils with difficulties with learning and behaviour.
  • Experience of Leading on Inclusion e.g. SENCO or similar.
  • Experience of working within LBAT or ASCT.
  • Current driving licence.

About Us

The APST (Alternative Provision Specialist Taskforce) is a multi-disciplinary team, embedded in mainstream schools. We have a presence in schools, which allows us to understand the cultures and settings, and our young people's place within these.

The APST aim to support children and young people who are at risk of permanent exclusion, and their families, whilst also supporting schools to build expertise and reduce exclusion.

As an Advisory Teacher in the APST, you will provide advice and support to 7 secondary schools in Crawley to improve outcomes for children and young people who experience difficulties with learning and / or behaviour and develop strong and trusting partnership-based relationships within the educational settings. You will have the opportunity to try new ways of working and develop your role to offer more in-depth and wrap around support to schools and young people.
