Purpose of position
· To look after the physical, emotional, cultural, and social needs of the residents using a person-centred approach.
· To observe and promote the president's choice, independence, dignity, privacy, fulfilment, and other rights.
· To create and maintain good professional relationships with resident's, their family and friends and other stakeholders.
· To actively support other care staff.
· To adhere to all regulatory and statutory obligations and Boars Tye Residential Home LTD policies, procedures, and guidelines.
· To actively market Boars Tye Residential Home LTD and promote a positive, personal, and professional profile, always ensuring the good reputation of Boars Tye Residential Home.
Principal responsibilities
· To provide personal care and support to the residents with a wide range of needs, illnesses, and disabilities.
· To know and understand the care and support of the resident.
· To undertake the tasks detailed in the resident's care and support plan using a person-centred approach and in the least intrusive way.
· To encourage the independence and motivation of the resident and not foster dependent behaviour.
· To provide input into the care and support plans of residents by regularly feeding back to the senior care assistant and keyworkers.
· To assist residents getting up in the morning and going to bed at night.
· To assist residents to wash, bath or shower.
· To assist residents to dress and undress.
· To assist residents to look after their skin, teeth, hair, and nails.
· To assist residents with toileting, continence management and personal hygiene.
· To assist residents with their prescribed topical lotions and medication (if trained) at the agreed level of support and as detailed in their medication usage care plan.
· To prepare and support food and drink for the resident, being aware of the residents' choice, likes/dislikes, nutritional needs, and cultural requirements.
· To provide light general household domestic duties, including housework and laundry, as detailed in the care plan, or instructed by management.
· To use manual handling equipment safely and correctly following training.
· To take responsibility for the safe handling of property and equipment belonging to the resident.
· To maintain good communication and develop effective working relationships with residents.
· To provide companionship to the resident, actively talking and listening to them about their interests.
· To help the resident to maintain contact with their family and friends.
· To accompany the resident on trips into the community.
· To assist the resident to manage their personal affairs if they have capacity to do so.
· To ensure as safe as possible the living environment for the resident, whilst respecting the residents' choice and rights.
· To assist with outside professionals when visiting the residents, if delegated by the senior carer. Only one person to attend with the outside professional unless further assistance is required.
· To escort residents on an emergency admission to hospital or a pre-booked appointment if a family member us unable to do so. The senior person on the shift will delegate which member of the care team will be the escort – unless there is a valid reason that you cannot escort the resident, you must follow the senior's directive.
Recording and Reporting
· To maintain detailed accurate records in respect of care and medication support given and tasks undertaken.
· To regularly read care and support plans and acknowledging changes.
· To protect the confidentiality of all information relating to the resident and not divulge information to anyone who is not authorised to receive it.
· To promptly report to the office or the person on call of any issues concerning the care, support, wellbeing or behaviour of the resident and update records accordingly.
· To continue to monitor where concerns have been reported and recorded.
· To recognise the signs of abuse and immediately report abuse or suspected abuse to a manager or authorised body.
· To report any complaints to the office or the person on call.
· To contact the office if you are going to be late to your contracted shift.
General
· To dress appropriately, wearing the uniform provided and using personal protective equipment provided by Boars Tye Residential Home LTD.
· To seek out best practice and look at innovative ways to improve the quality and efficiency of service delivery.
· To attend and participate in regular team meetings and any other relevant meetings.
· To attend in house and external training pertinent to the role of a care assistant.
· To assist in supervising newly recruited staff throughout their induction days and for the 12 weeks while the care certificate is being completed unless they have previously achieved the care certificate or have completed a level 2 or 3 in Health & Social care.
· To ensure completed weekly timesheets are submitted on time.
· To observe all health & safety rules and take reasonable care to promote health and safety of self and others and raise any concerns to a member of the management team.
· To aim to ensure everyone has equal treatment with dignity and respect.
· Any other duties requested by senior management, which are within the scope of the post.
The following to be completed when administering medication:
- Administer oral, inhalation, topical and intravenous medications to residents following the resident's medication administration record.
- Observe residents for medication adverse reactions and report any problems to the management team or in extreme cases to phone 111/999 for advice.
- Performing tasks associated with medication administration, including resident vital signs i.e., blood pressure readings/blood glucose readings.
- To check the temperature of the medication fridge, medication administering cupboard and the medication store cupboard.
· To make sure that when the medication cupboard, medication store cupboard, medication fridge, medication trolley and controlled drug cabinet are always locked when not in use.
· To check the expiry dates on all medication and any out-of-date medication must be placed into the returns box in the treatment room.
· To inform the management team when medication stock is diminishing so that the management team can re-order the medication.
· To interim check in/dispose medication following the correct procedure on ICARE health.
· To cover medication shifts when needed/to take on the medication champions duties when they are on annual leave/sickness i.e. Medication audit/booking in the monthly order/returning the monthly order.
· To be transparent and come forward when an error has been made when administering medication.
· To promote person-centred practice, dignity and privacy when administering medication.
· To follow the Mental Capacity Act 2005 when administering medication covertly.
· To follow Boars Tye Residential Home LTD medication policy.
● Answer all call bells as promptly and efficiently when not administering medication.
The following duties are to be completed during a night shift:
· To prepare vegetables for the following day.
· To charge all electrical hoists – adhering to the hoist charging checklist.
· To clean the lounge, dining rooms and toilets, adhering to the cleaning checklist.
